First you need to go to an area that is "under attack" as part of the new argent dawn/naxxramis quests. To see what area is under attack just open up your world map. Zoom out as far as you can, and any zone that is under attack will have a picture of a skull somewhere in that zone with the phrase "under attack". Head to that area and find a summoning circle - it will be near one of the huge floating islands, and probably camped by a bunch of other players. Mobs will randomly spawn, and as you kill them they have a chance to drop an item called a necrotic rune. You will want to collect as many of these as possible, as they can be turned in to an NPC at light's hope chapel for some pretty neat stuff.

As you continue to kill the random spawns at the summoning circle, eventually four summoners will appear around the necrotic shard, and will begin channeling on it. If you interact with these summoners you are given the option to interrupt the summoning using 8 necrotic runes. If you choose to do so, the summoner will turn in to a Shadow of Doom, a 61 elite mob. I've killed this mob three times now and each time I've been in a group with at least two other people; you still might have to worry about random adds spawning around you so be prepared to do some crowd control and have a healer present. Beware - summoning the shadow of doom is not the same as tagging it, and it takes a few seconds after it pops out before you can attack it, so be ready to do everything in your power to hit it ASAP to make sure it is your kill.

The Shadow of Doom will likely drop a corruptor's scourgestone. Also, each of the times I've killed it, it has dropped 30 necrotic runes. There is also a set of undead slaying gear which has int, stam and + spell damage vs undead for clothies, and stam and +atk pwr vs undead for leather, mail, and plate. The set consists of bracers, gloves, and chestpiece, and the set bonus is 2% bonus damage vs. undead. The chestpiece has a chance to drop from the shadow of doom (two out of three kills it dropped the cloth chestpiece and the third kill it didn't drop any). The gloves can be obtained by giving 30 necrotic runes to an NPC at light's hope. I still haven't found out where to get the bracers.

I spent over an hour at one of the circles today and nothing happened.. does the attack only happen once then move to a different location .. or does it have an insanely long respawn timer .. anyone know?

I figured it out the locations move at set times throughout the day... pretty lame blizzard.

the bracers drop off rare spawns that spawn in the middle near the crystal before the crystal is damaged and the shadows of doom come.

The random spawns differ, they can be casters, abombinations or maybe even crypt fiends.

Anyway, Four of these acolytes spawn when the Crystal is at about 10% health. You can stop their summoning in exchange for 8 Necrotic Runes, and the Shadow of Doom will appear. This is a lvl 60 or 61 Elite, with 40000 HP, a 3 second cast Fear and a 5 second Mind Flay for 130 damage per tick. Both attacks have a lower range than Fireblast.

I soloed one of these. Took me two Iceblocks to escape mob aggro (It's easier when there's soneone else around ;) ), Evocation and two pots. You just have to make sure to NEVER get in Fireblast range without Counterspell off cooldown, then they're easy as pie. Save your mana for Shatters.

I was in a 5-man group on a fresh necrotic shard in Tanaris.
We saw the summoners after a good 20 minutes or so into chipping away the non-elites, even with the shard at a higher health (didn't notice if it was 100% or 90%). We started summoning the Shadows and after defeating them we noticed the shard losing health.
So I guess the shard doesn't neccesarily have to be at 10% health to spawn the summoners. Perhaps someone has some more input on how to get the summoners up?

They have about 40k HP, which is not so bad. The hardest part about these guys is the adds. If you pull him far from the crystal, which seems like the obviously sensible thing to do, every now and then about 5 guys will come help the Shadow, running all the way from the crystal area. I dont know the rule about how often they will come and help.

I put in 8 shards to summon a shadow, and all 4 cultists became shadows. Has this ever happened to anyone?

The Summoners seem to arrive at intervals, probably as the Necrotic Crystal gets more and more damaged.
I was killing mobs waiting for my group to arrive and saw alliance guys kill all 4 summoners/shadows, so I was quite annoyed, thinking I'd missed my chance, but it wasn't long at all until another batch of summoners turned up.
And all this is with a Damaged Necrotic Crystal.
Incidentally, we managed to kill a Shadow of Doom with Level 60 Hunter, Rogue and Shaman, but it WAS a long difficult fight, witha bit of help from some confused alliance guys..

Soloed one of these bad boys as a level 59 priest. Shackle, mind blast, flay, shackle, mindblast, flay, shackle. Rinse and repeat 5000 times, but make sure you have high mana regen. Used bandages (of course), and a few pots.

And guess what? It dropped the robe!

cleaned the stone on my own down from like 40% left. Stupid as i was, i spoke to all the summoners at the same time, giving them 32 runes (whilst other undead were still around) then being defeated by the elites. If there are no more mobs around, speak to the summoners one by one - killing them took me 2 combat mana potions, and 2 mana stones - they dont necessarily drop the blues, but 30 runes.

Not much more to say than has already been said by others..

They are NOT immune to any kind of CC (root, stuns, etc.)

Just a tip about the non-elites, they have a very small aggro radius so you can normally kill a few in the way and just run past the others to get to the shade. If you get non-elite adds just keep the shade rooted/shackled and kill the non-elites first.

I soloed one of these as a frost mage. I used a few bandages though. Got the blue plate breastplate.

Solod as 17/0/34 mage, used an evoc though.

All in all easy to kite, just have to be careful for adds.

If the world event has stopped (no more invasions in Tanaris, BS, etc.), is there still a chance to complete the set with the chest piece?

Even a recurring invasion or hints of a relapse?

I have my whole set, but what about the other people? I reckon the scourge should return every year, just make up some bs story for it. This is a really handy set to have when your in a guild that only runs Scholo, Strath, UBRS etc.

This goes well with hunters and their aspect/aura/mark :D

they are easy to kill if u have a tank, a dps, and an healer... or just a tank and an healer, they can be shackled/rooted, just takes longer. Btw, u need 8 runes to "summon" him but he drops like 30...

Yeah I (hunter) tried to kite this guy and it seems that if you get him too far away from his buddies then he will start evading. I dont know how far the mages and warriors kited them but he evaded twice for me.

Absolutely OWNED them with Pally, Priest and Ice Mage(me).

Pally mounted up and ran around grabbing non elite mobs. Pulled them back and I spammed AoE till they died. Kited 1 shadow at a time away from respawns.

Repeat. (Yet still no robes for me.)

They're amazingly easy with a 5-man team.

1. Mount up and run in a circle
2. Mage AoE's end gets spam healed for maybe 10-15 seconds.
3. Tank pulls a couple shadows
4. Let the tank hold aggro while you kill off the extra adds
5. kill the shades one at a time
6. Repeat

They don't have much DPS. We had a harder time with the gazillion adds than we did with the shades. It is a world event I'm actually enjoying.

This NPC can be found in Blasted Lands (299), Burning Steppes (295), Eastern Plaguelands (246), Tanaris (214), Azshara (186), and Winterspring (156).
