Still a lot of issues with that tech.1. Several times I got pushed to other layer right during combat, almost killed mobs just left behind and "disappeared", bunch of alive ones spawned around. Probably don't switch layers in combat.2. Did escort quest in Redridge, whole party was pushed to another layer but once again quest NPC was left behind, need to redo whole quest again. Quite annoying. Should bring quest NPCs with party.3. Join same party to get same layer works either slow or doesn't work at all. A lot of times wasn't able to see my party/raid members till we all enter instance. Think it's related to layer already full so you can't join it till someone leaves, prob should reserve some spots in layer for ppl joining groups.
The recent change on the layers was a terrible mistake. The world feels emptier than a low pop private server.
I love these kind of posts, anything behind the scene to things I like is just fascinating to me. Thank you for sharing.
Very cool to see things from this perspective as a software engineering student. Layering seems like half nightmare half fun challenge to solve.
Forget about layering in classic, layering and sharding are so screwed up in retail that you can farm a rare with a 30-60 minute spawn timer (say, Rei-Lun) and you can sit in Guo Lai Halls for 3 hours on a bad day and not see a single spawn because you just happened to shard or layer at random and you didn't even know it. Atrocious.
Well this explains some weirdness I've seen lately. I usually avoid the pvp stuff in SoD so I haven't noticed it there, but in retail I see a lot of problems getting popped out of feast or boss fights when too many people congregate. That's annoying but nothing new. However, after doing the Love stuff in SW, my party went back to Valdrakkan and one person was in a different phase. I'd never seen that before.
I don't work in the games sector but am a systems person -- just wanted to say great post and breakdown on a level players can follow. Always appreciate this level of communication.
Still bugged AF on retail...Random sharding/layering/whatever during fights or world quests especially in Zaralek
These hardworking devs need to learn to ignore the whiney ass r/classicwow, discord and forum !@#$heads wasting their time posting and &*!@#ing about insignificant problems 24/7. God BLESS aggrend throwing shade back at the dingus lords whining on twitter.Phase 3 when, my class is broken, yadda yadda yadda. What the #$%^ did people expect? It's a wacky version of vanilla with abilities from other expansions and I feel every time I engage in a community space online its just ^&*!@, #$%^&, @#$%^, !@#$%. NOTHING is ever good enough. You have your classic era servers, you have hardcore, GO PLAY IT if you want that experience. Literally every day reddit has spun up some new meta about which class or aspect of phase 2 is unfair or broken. WE ARE PLAYING A LEVEL CAPPED HEAVILY MODDED VERSION OF VANILLA AND THE DEVS ARE WORKING 24/7 TO BALANCE, %^&*ing chill. Jesus christ. This has been a largely successful experience for sure, but if you are looking at SoD to be your "log 8 hours a day" game you need to move on to something else until we hit the 50 and 60 phase. Also think BEYOND this malding internet meta as to what this season means for future content. The future looks bright, stop minging!
Good post. I feel like all of the issues experienced by players in this post occur on high pop servers. On my medium pop server, I have yet to feel any lag or layer issues in STV.I'd love a version of classic where there was 1 megaserver per region/server type. Before logging in, we see a list of all the layers and population, and we choose which one to join. Full ones cannot be joined, but force new layers to open. This gives players more power to control the amount of lag they'll experience. Runescape works this way and it works well. Yeah I know people want server identity and all, but I'll take smooth gameplay with friends over that any day. The cons of players being stuck to 1 server outweigh the pros.
