News Round Up: The Elusive Unborn Val'kyr, PvP Changes in 5.3, Build 16958
In today's news, we have an epic blue post talking about all the PvP changes coming in 5.3--they should encourage more players to try PvP instead of being disheartened by a gear gap. We're also investigating the elusive source of a new battle pet,
Unborn Val'kyr
, and have a few new spell changes from a tiny 5.3 PTR build this morning.
PvP in 5.3
With the new scaling system in battlegrounds and arenas bringing everything down to ilvl 496, players behind on gear won't be as big of a squishy target for BiS-geared players--all that awesome PvE gear is getting scaled down. This new system also won't encourage players to keep their scaled-down raiding epics and ignore PvP gear, as the extra stats on PvP gear will give a survivability edge.
CM Nakatoir gave a few examples of players that could currently be discouraged by PvP--a progressed
Throne of Thunder
raider, and someone in starter-PvP gear, both wanting to try something new. In both scenarios, they get crushed by an opponent in Tyrannical gear. The raider, while doing decent damage, is squishy and dies a lot, while the person in PvP gear does poor damage and dies easily to someone in full Tyrannical gear.
While these scenarios were made up, they're fairly accurate bas

Children's Week 2013 Guide (April 29 - May 6)
Children's Week
is a week in which we brave a challenge greater than any undead monstrosity and a task more daunting than saving the world. We must become parents for all those orphans throughout Azeroth and make sure they are happy. We can't tank a child's fears, we can't heal its memories of pain, nor can we DPS the sorrow out of them. So equip your toys, make a mage conjure a candy table, fill your quiver with joy, load your gun with something colorful, and venture into the World of Parenting!
Children's Week
begins on
April 29th
at
11:00 AM
and ends on
May 6th
at
11:00 AM
(PDT).
Due to the advent of Cataclysm,
Children's Week
was changed in 2011 to have two new pets and redone locations for the initial tier of quests. There's nothing new in 2013, but since all vanity pets are now battle pets, you might be more interested in collecting pets this year! Since battle pets are also account-wide, you can collect different sets of pets on your alts to round out your collection faster.

5.2 PTR: New Elite and and Collectible Battle Pets
Today's news is all about battle pets on the PTR: the Pet Journal has been updated with over a dozen new collectible pets for 5.2 (including the adorable
Snowy Panda
), and we also have information on the new elite battle pets!
Elite Battle Pets
Elite Battle Pets are a new type of rare pet challenge in 5.2, similar to
Pandaren Spirit Tamer
in 5.1. The catch is that you'll be fighting one elite pet, instead of a team.
So far we have found at least one elite pet per zone, and defeating the Elite Battle pets completes
Beasts of Fable
and rewards you with a
Red Panda

bug that will be fixed in an upcoming PTR build
.
We flew around the PTR and grabbed screenshots and abilities for all the elite pets, which are listed below. Click on the zone links to bring up a map with the pet's coordinates.

Pet Battles: Leveling by Zone, October 12th Hotfixes
Continuing with our pet battle coverage, we'll be focusing on the leveling flow today, sorting each zone by their wild battle pet levels. Pet battle progression through zones roughly follows the same path you'd take questing, with a few minor deviations. Each zone in the tables below takes you to that zone's battle pet map, with a list of all the pets found in the zone and the pet locations marked on the map.
Here's some basics about capturing wild pets:
You can capture a wild battle pet when it is below 35%.
At 35%, you can use the
Trap
ability to attempt to capture the pet.
This takes up a turn and there is a chance it can miss--which diminishes with each failed capture.
You can only capture one companion pet when fighting a team of three wild pets. You must also win the battle to retain your captured pet!
Captured wild pets may have their level decay when captured (still much better than leveling one from scratch):
Level 16-20 pets lose one level.
Level 21-25 pets lose 2 levels.
Click the cut to see our charts showing what level wild pets are in each zone!
