why do you suggest putting those first points in holy, then respeccing to disc, then putting points back into holy. Wouldn't it be easier (and a little cheaper) ot just start of in the disc tree after Spirit Tap?
Two reasons here.
1) The levels below 20 are
the
hardest for beginning Priests. We don't have just *anything* strong at those levels. Regen is weak yet, Spellpower is almost non-existent on gear outside BoA, and we have no Holy Fire on top of that, coupled by a yet-weak Smite. Result: almost no regen and agonizingly low DPS. In that situatuon, just *anything* that could help the misery is really really welcomed. Is the 5% crit and cast-time reduction on Smite worth 1 gold for the respec? My answer is a resounding Yes.
2) Now fast forward to level 25. We already have some SP, Int and Spi. Now we
can
afford the temporary DPS reduction, as at that point we are more restrained by the lack of mana than the lack of DPS. And then, there are people decked in heirlooms, who blast through mobs with 2-3 shots and feel no lack of mana even at this point. Those people can just skip the Disc tree until they do need the mana, or until they fill all DPS-enhancing talents in Holy.
Ahh okay, that clears it up.

I just had to post here again.
I am now 56, ran randoms instances since level 48 with barely any breaks -apart from rl ofcourse-. I've been top dps/damage done in almost every one of them. Once I was healing and still 2nd on dps (fail group, prot warrior was 1st, but meh).
Ofcourse I've also been kicked out of one of them for "not having a dps spec" while I was on 43% damage done and 49% dps of the group XD.
I've even 2manned BRD(at 54) 'till pyromancer with a 52 fury warrior without boa gear (so a lot of healing thrown in on my part) without dying once!
In short: I LOVE THIS SPEC! =D
Chiv, thanks for this build!

Great guide. I have heard from many players (including a few of my main's guildies that are priests) that a Priest is the hardest class to level. And I agree with that statement.
I am working on leveling mine, and will be following your recommendations. I swapped my spec to get Spirit Tap (my main's level 80 so gold isn't hard to get for me) and have Inner Fire now that I made it to level 12. I'm already noticing a huge difference in speed at which I can kill mobs, since I'm not healing after every fight anymore.
say whaaaaaaat? go level a warrior pre wotlk and tell me again that priests are harder to level...

you got a time machine there? Nowadays, priests are much harder to level than warriors... He didn't say it's always been that way, he said that it
is
.. which i'd have to agree for the most part (never having levelled a hunter or druid).. Mages are equally as hard imo because of the sheer amount of mana they go through.

My priest is lvl 48. I leveled her from 20 to 40 with the Energizer spec (loved it) got told I was doing it wrong by a pure holy priest so I followed his build (hated it) and now I have re-spec'd energizer again. Just this afternoon a PUG consisting of a Frost mage, Druid Tank, and myself 3 manned the hell out of Maraudon (orange crystals). To be fair, we started at the bottom of the instance after the initial 5 man finished princess and broke up. But still I was healing
and
DPSing and only had to stop and drink maybe 3 times.
And I have crap gear!
I Love This Build
My hat's off to Lovewood-Arathor and Talyne-Frostmane, great run y'all, a real pleasure!

I must say that I loved this guide. I leveled a Priest with this spec to 50 (where I dual-specced Shadow/Holy) in LFD as a Healer, and still rocked 1st or 2nd overall damage. It was quite fun to keep everyone alive and consistently out-damage them.

I wish more people would see how great this spec is. I was on another character and I met two people who INSISTED that shadow was the easiest and best way to level and any other way is just stupid because it takes too long.
Wish I had met them on my priest so I could show them that smite spec was better. :P

I had to personally show the spec and it's capabilities while leveling my priest because they did not believe me. I was out DPS'ing paladins and warriors, their tears shined my silks.
Progress Report
My priest finally dinged level 52 has night. It's time to finally drop Holy and go Shadow... maybe? I see Shadow Priests constantly going OOM in dungeons so I'm still a bit skeptical about switching to shadow for the remaining grind time. We'll see how it goes.

Never stop and wait for dots. Just keep moving from one mob to another, letting the mobs you've DoTed up beat uselessly on your shield.
You just have to break out of the 1 mob at a time mind set. If you like doing one mob at a time, stick with the smite spec. If you don't mind having 1-3 mobs tag around after you, slowly dying to your DoTs whilst beating on your shield, then Shadow becomes very fast and efficient.
In fact, I consider shadow using the above routine, the most efficient leveling spec in the game. It pulls from range, kills nearly every mob in 3 casts (1.5s casts or instants), and mobs die near you for easy looting. This minimizes the amount of movement you need to do.
That doesn't diminish the fact that until you get VT and Dispersion, the Holy Fire/Smite spec is still amazingly good at what it does: alllow priests to quest/grind efficiently while still having a strong healing build.
In other words... Pretend you're a warlock. :P
