Well, i was looking at the weighting presets and then i got to thinking, lets say you pick up
Pendant of Fiery Havoc
. If the weighting presets are spot on, wouldn't you be able to squeeze out a little more dps if you gemmed it with with a
Reckless Monarch Topaz
?
In other words, what I am saying is if you are being restricted from a socket bonus of 5 spell power or more because of one yellow socket being gemmed with a
Runed Scarlet Ruby
, it (in theory) would be better dps to put in a
Reckless Monarch Topaz
instead.

more so
veiled
in fact.
there are exceptions but they're very few and far between (SP is a rare socket bonus and a yellow socket is required making it even more rare). for those who don't have the depth of understanding to see the exceptions it's much more important that the advice is taken on board that gemming for socket bonuses is a bad idea.
it's a pernicious misunderstanding that people
have
to put the correct colour in each socket so just breaking down that myth is half the battle. it can only be done by being very simple and direct with the message of not gemming for socket bonuses at all even if there are some very rare occasions where it's not strictly true.

yeah, veiled would be a better dps increase. i should have mentioned reckless would be for a hit capped lock.
As for the rest of your statement, i see what you're saying, i was just checking for my sake.

hehe, yeah it's kinda one of those "shhh, don't make things too complicated for the less informed!" things ^_^
if you say:
"this is the answer"
then it sinks in but if you say:
"this is the answer in some cases but it depends on
x
,
y
and very occasionally
z
and
only
when
a
and
b
aren't the case but
c
is."
then people forget what you meant in the first place.
i'm being silly but you see my point.

Generally if the socket bonus is Spellpower, it can easily be profitable to use an Orange gem. Blue sockets, not so much (for PvE). Also, certain items (notably items with several gem slots) aren't very useful as far as socket bonuses go (don't gem purple in a blue and orange in a yellow to get +7 spellpower; its not worth it). The exception to this is meta-gem activation; if you need a blue anyway to simply activate your meta you might as well gem a purified twilight and an orange for the socket bonus.
Really it all comes down to common sense and basic math; weigh out the benefits of the bonus and choose wisely where to put gems for meta activation and you should be in ship shape.

Yeah, im not able to get on wow atm, so i have been working it out and it appears that its not worth it to put a
Purified Twilight Opal
in place of a
Runed Scarlet Ruby
in a blue socket. But if there are 3 sockets on the item, one red, one yellow, one blue (and i know, there are what, maybe 2 items with that socket set up?) with a socket bonus of 9 sp, then its worth it to put a
Runed Scarlet Ruby
,
Purified Twilight Opal
, and a
Reckless Monarch Topaz
in the slots to get the socket bonus. Anyway, i think we have beat this horse enough.

I used to think you HAD to put the right coloured gem in the slot or it wouldn't work :)
