I haven't really done any pvp, and was wondering where the hell should a person start?
There are many arenas, battlegrounds etc., but which one should i do? Where and how do i get pvp gear and so on... Many thanks to the people who help.

The more PvP you do, the more comfortable you'll be against each class.
So just do a bunch of BGs and eventually you'll learn.

well, stating a class would be helpful. Even tough you're in a point where you know nothing about pvp, if you're experienced with your class, you can have some idea of what to do and how to do it. If not, shooting your spells at random will get you killed.
With that in mind, doing a bit of pre research is always nice. Find the weaknesses and strengths of your class. Check some builds, as already said, too.
Battlegrounds are a good start, and so are Duels. fighting outside Orgrimmar/Stormwind (is it where Alliance usually fight? never played one on retail) can give you some hints on what you'll face.
And if you're fully PvE geared, start getting some pvp gear. dependance on it, once again, depends on your class - healers and lower-armor classes tend to need a lot more Resilience.
A good begin is the profession-crafted items with resilience.
And, another CRUCIAL piece of equipment, is the Medallion of the -Faction-. YOU WILL NEED IT TO SURVIVE, it is extremely important to have it the way pvp is designed arround controls.

Well far as the class goes -
. I know my gear isn't up to par, but I did do OS, and my DPS was third in list. I'm turning to PvP because PvE is impossible for me on my realm. Simply because everyone wants achievements, experience and gear, and i can't really get those w/o doing any raids and so on... it's an infinite loop. Being a human makes the medallion kinda useless to me, because they have a shared cooldown? Also, I've done some BG's as you advised, but it's kinda annoying as almost everyone else there is heavily geared and/or skilled.
Oh, forgot to say this - To the people saying "Do some heroics", well that ain't an option for me as well, because people don't like my stats and/or gear. So I'm basically locked out of my favourite part of the game, which is PvE.
Also, about guilds. I can't find a good enough guild to even make a group for a single heroic for like... 2-3 days. So that's not an option either :(

You will have to grind a LOT of BG's. Try to get into a pug 25m naxx every week. Getting a weapon and 2p valorous bonus would be a MAJOR upgrade for you.
Now.... Gem and enchant everything. You will get booted for not having gem slots filled and armor enchants, and with your HP, they will be looking at your gear. Don't worry about the best enchants as you should be able to replace your gear quickly, but you need to at least have something dps oriented on your gear*cough*shoulders*cough*. Just remember, the better the enchants, the more damage you do and more likely you can get some people to take you along in groups.
As far as PvP goes, you want to pick up the deadly offset pieces quickly. Replace pieces in order of level(green, blue<80, blue=80, epics from heroics/raid) and stam content, armor first. Do WG religiously and pick up the Titan forge gear and resil trinket with AP on use(unless you find pieces with better stats first).
Do vault weekly, and don't suck on dps. Push over 2-2.5k or they will boot you if the raid wipes on emalon. You can bump your dps(rather cheating, but it'll keep you in the raid if your dps is low) by spamming DnD under the adds every CD, giving you a nice boost in your dps, but don't kill them.
If you play a lot, and grind a LOT of BG's, you can get "ok" pvp gear in about a week and possibly find a ret pally or healer that will 2v2 with you. A prot paladin healer is a very powerful partner, so look into that. Timed right, you can keep a healer silenced/stunned for a long time. Go frost and it's even scarrier since you can get him to blow his trinket with stuns, then hungering cold>strangulate at the end>shield silence>HoJ. That's almost 30 seconds with no heals.
That's all I got for you. DK's aren't in high demand, so get gear quickly and be good at your class.

Well as DK you can easily use a tonne of PvE gear in PvP and do extremely well. So don't just BG, do raids as often as you can.
And make sure to spec either frost or unholy (14/54/3 or 0/17(19)/54(52))
For arena grab a healer.
Cast Hungering Cold, wait for one minute because they probably used a trinket on it, cast Hungering Cold again.
Hit face on keyboard. Profit.
Hope something here helped.
Fixed.
This, but only if you can get both enemies in range of it(and it's not ret/disc). I ran into this team, and I have to do some serious kiting as a FERAL DRUID to survive my healer being stuck in hungering cold. I feel sorry for any rogue/warrior/hunter stuck in this situation. This is a very good combo to play with a prot paladin.

I'm fairly new to WoW (almost 5 months) but I do have a 60 NED (spec Feral) and 35 Gnome Warlock and 40 Troll Hunter. Now that I can wear mail with hunter, I'm considering giving BG more chance, especially with my pet, Gygax. Any suggestion? i have a guildee making me a set of mail (at least the pieces i can wear so far)... In a RP realm now though.. Blackwater Raiders.
