why would you run wow from a virtualized windows installation? just download/buy the mac version. ultimately there's going to be very little that you can do upgrade-wise for it though.
Actually, it sounds to me that he's replaced OS X completely with Windows, not running it in virtualization.
Since it's an old enough iMac that it was just given as a gift like that, odds are the issue is the spec of the machine. Any idea what video card you have in it? (I'm guessing one of the older ATI Radeons, like the X1600). If this that old, unless you turn the graphics down a bit, that's about all you're going to get out of it in terms of FPS, especially in new content like Northrend. Also, I didn't see if you were running XP or Vista? If you're running Vista, losing it and dropping back to XP could get you a few more FPS.
It's also possible you can squeeze out a few more FPS by optimizing your Windows installation for gaming. There are about a billion guides for that online now, so a quick Google, specifying which version of Windows you have, might be of some help.
All in all though, my guess is that you're pretty much stuck with what your're getting, so either trun down the graphics options or the resolution.

Or, how about running it with the operating system it was built for? I think that will help a lot.
Apple provides the Windows drivers themselves. Ergo it should work just fine. Hell, for a while it was a marketing point to businesses. Aside from which, he's probably running Windows for some reason or another, else he would probably have OS X on there. Replacing the OS for performance issues, without attempting to further identify or solve the issue first, is a bit like replacing a car's drive train because you have a flat.
That being said, I'm all for giving OS X a shot to see what happens. But skipping troubleshooting and replacing the OS might not provide any net benefit and just be a waste of time. And if he is running Windows for a specific reason, it might be unfeasible to begin with.
Additionally a quick google turns up that people running Windows on their Macs tend to get better FPS than then they're running OS X.
