Resistance Auras - how effective?

Morning all, i managed to get my ret pala to lvl 65 last night - im rolling in quest gear so its pretty pants - and im curious about something.
How effective are the resistance auras? im usually using retri aura for the damage boost at all times.
I was questing away last night and got my ass handed to me by an undead warlock of the same level on numerous occassions. I might add that i didnt instigate the attack - he just decided to gank me for a bit!
Every time i went in for the kill or tried to get his health down he just kept critting me massively ( regularly 2800 / 3000 damage crits ) and his feldog was a right pain as well.
Im situations like this would i have been better switching to a fire or shadow resistance aura instead of staying in my current one?
Do the auras actually give a chance to resist all the damage or only a percentage?
Thanks
Adam

They're the only spell mitigation ret has, and they actually provide quite a lot of spell mitigation. Plus if you ever go holy and take Aura Mastery you can drop raid damage by about a third to a half for 12 seconds on some fights. Against warlocks you'd have to figure out their spec before deciding which one to use, but I doubt anyone has spell pen at 65 so it might make quite a bit of difference.

It can be rather beneficial in PvP to switch to a resistance aura if you know what you're up against. And technically, yes, the auras CAN give you a chance to fully resist spells; however, the aura alone won't give you enough resistance against something your level. The Aura gives you a static amount of Resistance -- check your character sheet to see how good of a mitigation it's giving against something your level.
As pointed out, you'll still get the 3% damage increase no matter what aura you use, and against a caster, you'll probably get much more use out of a nice chunk of mitigation over doing a small amount of damage back anytime they finish a 2 second cast.

Resistance only gives you a chance to fully resist a spell that applies a debuff to you (not including DoTs though), and mitigates damage from spells dealing only damage. (You can fully resist a frost nova but you can only partially resist a shadow bolt).
Assuming the caster is also level 65:
At your level shadow resistance aura gives you 70 resistance which equals to about a 16%(16.15..%) mitigation.
To get a 75% mitigation you'd need 325 resistance and this is the most you can get out of it.
So a 16% damage mitigation against all his shadow spells or ~60(?) damage each time he strikes you.

They changed that in 3.1 in order to not enforce a paladin to use a certain aura (holy = conc, prot = devo, ret = ... ret)
I really didn't catch on to the funny part though.

Thanks for all the replies fellas, seems like ill have to start chopping and changing as is needed - depending on the situation.
I found this quote odd -
Funny, while I was leveling my paladin, if I use Ret aura I'd see 106% multiplier in my character sheet, but if I switch to any other aura, I'd see 103% instead(the 3% being from Crusade)
As this is what im actually seeing on my character at the moment - with ret aura up my weapon damage shows 106% as opposed to 103% when using any of the other auras - hence why i was using it all the time in the first place.
But if you say it applies to all the auras - is this likely to be just a tooltip error or something?
Thanks again

You should be seeing 106% at all times with any aura up because of both Sanctified Retribution and
this
, if I'm not mistaken. If it's not showing up, I would assume it's just not showing properly?

Either that, or the talent tool tip is broken, but i can confirm that only ret aura shows the 106% all others show a lower amount

Fixed this now, i needed to respec ( ive taken out SoC now ive got Martyr ) and when i put my points back in the talent worked correctly.
Ive now got 106% no matter which aura i use - it might not have registered the first time if you was already using the aura at the time.
Thanks

Son, do you think a measly $250,000,000.00~ a month income can buy you updated tooltips? Back in my day, tooltips had to walk uphill, in twenty different languages, backwards, while a def mute money did the translating! You cant just HIRE someone freshly out of grammar school to do this! In needs to be in a future patch! How the hell else would we fill out those patch notes nice and beefy?

You forgot to mention the 10,000,000.33 people reading the tooltip as well as the income ;p
