Before I turned off my Recount DPS meter...
At this point I don't care as much about DPS as I used to while tanking. I just watch Omen now.
I'll agree with you that as a tank I try not to focus on my DPS number, or else I'll just get ticked off that it's 40% less than DK tanks...
However, Recount shouldn't be used (solely) as a DPS meter. I mean, if it's not your role or you just don't care about analyzing fights, then fine; but there is SO much more to improving a raid than looking at some pointless DPS list.

As long as you are not trying Ulduar hard modes you should not care too much for your dps, but for the fights where will matter HS will be your best friend. I am pushing around 2 k dps(depends on buffs and boss) but i don't know how much my wrist will take from the abuse i make from spamming HS.I have good healers and i go for EH so rage is not a problem for me, the problem is dumping it .
As for the second questions i will go for Furry if you didn't play dps so far as Arms you need to have some good practice.Personally i love Arms, i find it very challenging and to score big numbers it's about how you manage your cd in relation to the boss fight(not the case for furry).

How can it be used to improving a raid (for a tank) ?
Besides, at least 2 or 3 other DPS-focused players will have it running and enjoy spamming it when they are top of list or - annoyingly - during loot rolls.
if you are also the RL, it is invaluable. i look at the death report every wipe to see how the first person went down, then figure out how to fix that. like, "hey dummy, you stood in the fire for 7 ticks".
healing meters have limited use; i know every class/assignment is different, but you can identify people who are WAY off the pace.
dps reports are obvious, just to make sure everybody is pulling their weight.
80% of the time, i'm just looking at the deaths tab.

Unless you are the raid leader, or you just like knowing the information, maybe recount isn't a great tool for some people.
Like Marklar said, the death tab is great for seeing the last few seconds before someone died. Separating out the boss can be useful for seeing things like how much damage he took from what sources (heavily utilized before the XT Heart nerf to see the damage contribution of the raid to the Heart). Checking tabs for how many interrupts or dispels were done can be helpful for finding and solving problems.
