As a tank you pretty much have to have glyph of maul if you're tanking more than one mob at a time, not having it is crazy. You'll end up performing very few white attacks over the duration of a heroic, you'll convert almost all of them to mauls. I suggest you maul a few times while swiping, then change to a target who hasn't been hit by your mauls and start on them. Maul plays an extremely large part of your threat generation, use it (and the glyph).

If you don't seem to be consuming rage correctly, you might make sure that you have a macro for maul that looks like this:
#showtooltip
/startattack
/cast !Maul
If you don't use
!Maul
, then hitting it again after you hit it will actually deactivate it and make the next attack a normal swing rather than a Maul.

Can you clarify this a little pelf, I'm confused by your wording...
/cast Maul
If I spam this, I'm going to be turning Maul on and off?
/cast !Maul
If I spam this, I'll just keep maul 'On' all the time?
right?
Edit: After searching around the interwebs a little I found a few articles and I've convinced myself I understand what you were saying now. "/cast !Maul" can ONLY turn Maul ON, but not OFF. "/cast maul" is just a toggle. New wrinkle in my brain, ty pelf =)

You got it! It's like any on-next-attack ability. It's a toggle. The exclamation form does as you said -- only turns on. Much like /attack is a toggle and /startattack only enables. The same can be used for shifting to do a one-line powershift from one form directly back to that form (/cast !Cat Form).
The exclamation point is your friend :).
