Mithril stays yellow until 225 and green until 275, so I'm not sure what you're talking about?
Unless of course you are trying to level by smelting.... And in that case, you are doing it very, very wrong, and very, very expensively.
You should be leveling mining by actually mining things, not smelting.
But yes, mine Mithril until 230, then you can do some Dark Iron as well, and then at 245 you can start mining Small Thorium veins and at 275 Rich Thorium veins.

Correct. Smelting is not an efficient way to skill up.
Just keep mining Mithril until 245 or so, then mine a mix of Thorium and Mithril to 275, and keep mining Thorium until 300. No point to ever take a break and smelt- in most cases, the ore itself will sell for more than the bars, therefore you are losing money to by smelting.

I found Burning Steppes to be the best to finish up Mithril/Move on to Thorium, but that's just me.
The progression from Badlands (Mithril and Iron) to Searing Gorge (Mithril, Dark Iron, Small Thorium) to Burning Steppes (Mithril, Small Thorium, Rich Thorium) worked great.
