Profiler gear Score system questions
Return to board index
Post by

I am curious about the differences between the "Weight Scale per spec" system from the item database and the gear Score system being used on the profiler.
There does not appear to be a correlation and some discrepancies. One example from the profiler introduction post highlighting some of these difficulties.
I would really like to trust the wowhead gear score system, but it is not clear how the number is calculated or what it is supposed to represent.

Some of the item level rating seems odd to me.
Here's an example. The weapon I am currently using is Shiver with a +24 gem in it, and the accuracy enchant. It give me 155 for the item, 16 points for the gem, and 50 points for the enchant for a total of 221 points. Then I checked this other guy out and he had Titanguard with the same accuracy enchant. However he had like 186 points for the item and 50 points for the enchant for a total of 236 points.
Shiver and Titanguard are the same speed, same damage range, same DPS, same 232 item level.. Titanguard is +1 strength, +0 stamina, +8 defense rating, +0 parry, and +6 hit rating. Shiver has a red socket with a +4 hit bonus on it.
It just seemed odd to me that Titanguard is given such a higher base item rating for only have a couple points here and a couple points there; that is assuming that the gear score is made up of a tally of relevant stats on a particular item.
edit: So, found someone else with Shiver that used a Dodge/Stam gem and got the +4 hit bonus. They still have only 155 for the item and 16 for the gem socket. Also, they happen to have their enchanted with Blade Ward, which is giving +0 enchant score bonus.

So in summary, I am hoping someone can answer the following questions:
How is the weight scale different from the gear score?
Why are they different?
How is the gear score supposed to be used if it does not take into account spec differences? (obviously I dont' know right now what it takes into account)
Thanks!

Gear score is literally a score of the items. It is a measure of the item's value, which in turn is based on its slot, level, and quality. It is nothing more complicated than that.

What determines a character's color of their item score? For example, many level 80's that I've seen have a higher gear score than my hunter, DK, and druid (1079, 547, 629, respectively), yet their gear score will be green while my 3 main characters all have blue scores.

It seems like it would be very valuable to add a column to the profiler using the talent spec based weight scale. The weight scale in use by Wowhead is very useful and it seems it is a real shame to not take advantage of this feature that has already been implemented.
Some gear has a higher item level/score, but it is actually worse then other, lower score, gear based on the stats you need for a specific spec. So if I am using the profiler to compare how well geared to people are, then I would prefer to use a weight scale instead of a gear score.
Is that a possible addition to the Profiler?
For each profile you already have the spec, so you could just apply the weight scale for that spec with all the gear and enchants and have that as a column and a total for the profile.
I have a hard time justifying using Score to compare people for a raid PUG.
Thanks!

Weight scales are useful when looking for upgrades and comparing two characters with the same class and build. It breaks down when trying to apply them universally, even with normalization. Scales are highly personal, as they depend a lot on a character's
current
stats (hit cap, expertise cap, defense cap, etc) to have relevance.
For example, when you reach the hit cap, all further hit rating is worth 0 -- but if you apply that to your existing scale and items already worn, the numbers get thrown off. Its a tool for upgrades more than measuring current gear.
Gear scores, on the other hand, tell you how good someone's gear is at a glance -- the overall level and quality of it. By comparing these numbers you can see if someone's gear is up to snuff for Ulduar or if they need to head back into heroics.
Another, similar metric, would be the average item level and quality of someone's gear. The main difference between a gear score and an average, however, is that gear score takes into consideration the slot as well; an epic chest piece is worth more than an epic ring of the same level, because it gives more bonuses.
If you have suggestions for improvements for the profiler, please put them in the
feedback thread
. Make sure you read all the current known issues and suggestions before you post them. Thanks.
