Healing Mana problems

I have just hit 80 on my priest and I want to heal, however other priests in my guild that are very well geared complain about how they constantly have to worry about mana. Is it just a mechanic of being a holy priest now that you are bound to run out of mana, or is there something that can be done about this? (without having to run 25-man content)

Personally when in boss encounters of any kind, I consider the
Shadowfiend
and
Hymn of Hope
to be a staple. When you're down to about 20-30% of your total Mana, hit the Hymn (which increases your mana pool by a bit) and then the Shadowfiend (set it to Aggressive so it doesn't spend any time idling). Blood Elves should also fire their
Arcane Torrent
whenever it's off the CD.
Other than that, for 25-man content I'd bring
potions
and food buffs that either increase your
Spirit
or
direct MP5
. If possible at all, use downtimes when nobody is being hurt to let your 5-second regen kick in again.
If the group is taking avoidable damage by the truckloads and you run out of mana as a consequence, that's not really your fault, so sadly there's nothing you can do if that should occur.

The problem here is that in order to be able to do 10-man raid content, my buddies find that they have to be on their toes and healing most of the time. There isn't any spare time during the fight to use Hymn of Hope for 8 seconds. If they do, then people die. And it is frustrating because we don't have the people to do heroic raids, just normal raids.

In addition to the helpful comments above, if I could see an armoury link it would help me pinpoint any gear/spec issues, if there are any. :)

Ok. Thanks. I think that answers my question.

Sounds like people are undergeared. And idiots. Most AoE damage is avoidable. It also depends on whether you run with 2 or 3 healers for 10 man.

They are definitely not undergeared nor are they idiots. There are some fights (sapphiron, mimiron, etc.) that aoe damage is just unavoidable. It happens. They have a really hard time keeping their mana up. Although, one thing that confused us is how you all maintain 25% crit. I just don't quite see how you get that much crit from heroic/enchants/gems/10-man raid gear. Maybe I'm wrong.
And, we never have the ideal make-up for a raid, so missing on replenishment may be one of the major problems they have been having. We usually run with 2-3 pallys, at least 1 druid (sometimes 3), a MM hunter, 2 locks, and some form of warrior/rogue/shaman.

I completely agree with Catreann. In fact, depending on how much gold your willing to dish out, you could buy enough gear to be ready for 25 naxx and have an easy time at it! Illusion goes for 800-900g on my server atm, and it's one of the best initial gear pieces you could buy. If you have the gold, Je'Tze's Bell is another amazing trinket.
Run H Nexus until you get the mace, a mace w/ 49 int and 19 mp5 is amazing for starting your gear off! The spellweave items will give you a huge launch on your sp/haste and then theres numerous items the AH.
My advise to you is search the AH for everything available, decide how much gold your willing to spend, and gear up. Once that's done, you need to start gemming/chanting everything you have. Any gear that still needs to be replaced, can be gotten through 10 naxx/10 OS and heroics, or if you bought enough, you can also enter 25 naxx/OS.
Also, replenishment is a must...if the guy has mana, he should have replenishment in a 25 man, end of story. I'd recommend at least 3 dps w/ replenishment in any 25 man, which shouldn't be to hard to accomplish. As far as locks are concerned, Destruction Warlocks have Replenishment.

Few tips:
- Overhealing is one of the main reasons why the average Priests OOMs fast. You have to know the average healing values of your spell. For instance, don't bother casting a Prayer of Healing on three guys who are missing 1000 health. Likewise, don't cast Prayer of Mending on the tank again if he miraculously hasn't been hit for those seven seconds and still has your first ProM.
- Cross healing is a big problem as well. Cross healing is when one healer heals a target efficiently, then another healer heals that already healthy target again, resulting in overheal, resulting in a wasted GCD, time, and mana. Grid helps a ton in cross healing and giving good estimate values of your heals to prevent overhealing. It lights up a player's health bar by a bit when someone is already healing that target, and it also shows approximately by how much. So if Priest #1 were to be casting a Prayer of Healing on group 1, you'd see everyone in group 1's health bar become slightly lit up by the amount that they'll be healed for. When you see this, it is your cue to ignore Group 1 and instead heal Group 2-5.
- Flash Heal is inefficient, but it is your best single target healing for numerous reasons, so don't completely ignore it but do not spam it unless it is necessary to have yourself as an extra staple main healer. It's HPM isn't as great as other spells, and it only heals one target. Often, it's overhealing, especially in 25s. However, Surge of Lights are a different story. If you're spot on with reflexes and fast healing, SoL procs should net you a good amount while not costing any mana. Either way, you're stacking Serendipity, which is a very essential buff for certain fights like Kologarn, XT Hard Mode, and Iron Council Hard Mode.
- Prayer of Mending is one of your cheapest and most efficient spells, so do use it on the tank or anyone taking constant AoE damage. If you suspect an incoming Tantrum or other AoE like from Ignis, be sure to slap this on before the actual damage comes, so you have more healing, more efficiency, and still have the time to PoH/CoH. If you ever find Prayer of Mending with multiple stacks on yourself and wish to spread it, use Shadow Word: Death. If you don't miss, it will pass on to whoever needs the most healing nearby. It's not reliable or too quick, so don't use it in emergencies but rather when things are going smoothly but you think you'll still need some mana in the future.
- So long as Shadowfiend isn't CC'd (Auriaya's fear, for instance), killed by AoE (Overload from Iron Council), rooted (Hodir's crap), or affected in some other way, he should always be bringing you to 100%. Using him right before Heroism is a good way to get mana back insanely quick while being able to cast any spell worry-free and quickly. However, you're bound to get 100% even without Heroism.
- Hymn of Hope is too long, you say? Be sure to have a good amount of haste. Don't ever gem or enchant for it. Heck, don't even choose gear based on haste alone. Just get the closest to BiS that you can, and the haste will come to you. It's still too long, you say? Use Hymn of Hope when under Haste effects (this means if you're Heroismed, Power Infused, Haste Potted, Trinketed, etc.)
- If you've got one of them "Use: Gives Spirit," use it as soon as you hit around 80% or so mana. Then use it on every cooldown. This helps significantly. Be smart, though. If you are about to stay out of the 5SR for a good while, this will benefit you even more. "Use: Stack MP5" works a tad bit differently. You instead want to use this when you're going to be spamming a good amount (for instance, all your AoE spells and whatnot in a matter of seconds.)
- Renew is more efficient than you think. Use it on targets who require a tad bit of healing but aren't too hurt enough for a Flash Heal. And do keep Renew every now and then on the Tank, or keep it constantly on him for tank-intensive fights.
- Lightwell is a HUGE mana saver for XT Hard Mode and Iron Council Hard Mode, amongst others. Since people are too stupid to use it, all ten charges are basically left for you. While taking AoE damage, simply click the well. You're still free to use your mana on people other than yourself, and it's off the GCD too. Use Desperate Prayer if you're desperate, Lightwell otherwise.
