Each tank is *generally* equal but they each excel in certain areas. Druids have very high HP making them good for single target, paladin has good aoe abilities and damage reduction making them good for raid trash or instances, wars i'm not 100% sure but I think they excel at bosses as their aoe tanking ability is generally weak. Death knights are theoretically the best at tanking casters but they also excel at aoe tanking like the paladin.
Each tank is different, just pick the one that suits what you like the best. If I had to pick, I'd do a paladin though just because I like their playstyle overall.

Tanking requires a lot of paying attention to environment - making sure you're in LoS for healers, watching out for pats. Those are common to every tank.
What you could do, and I don't know if it's a good idea or not, is you could create a DK, spend 2 hours on initial quests and get to 58 and into Outlands. Than you can get a group for ramps, and see if you want to be a tank.
Every other class will require more time, as you'll need to get to level 13 or so to tank initial instance, and frankly I don't know if anyone's running that instance still.
But that's just to see if you like tanking.
I like tanking, but I think it's a personality-disorder.
As for which class, it's up to you. For example, i don't want to be a bear, so I never tanked as a druid ... well I tried, and didn't like being a bear. I normally tanked on warrior and than paladin, but when DKs came out, I figured 2-hander tanking > hiding behind shield. But all that is cosmetic preference. (I do tank Ulduar, we're about half way in there, not a truly leet guild, and no hard modes)
Warriors are very well rounded tanks, and no one will ask you to heal. So if you want to tank and not heal, and you like shields, this one is for you.

i believe Druids are the best tanks partially because of
http://www.wowhead.com/?spell=5209
and if u put 3 points into
http://www.wowhead.com/?spell=33856
makes you uncrittable.

Finally Pallies- they are good at keeping aggro, but they lack the DKs ability to reduction the boss and
they struggle with initial aggro.
what are you smokin? :O
Paladins have like the best initial threath of all the classes!
Avengers shield plus exorcism when you are running to the boss is atleast 15k threat follow that up with a judgement+ ShoR and your on 40k+. I have a tankadin myself, and i never have any aggro issues, except if there is a high dps warlock :p.
Altough i agree on that paladins have less abilities to reduce damage on bosses.
