just like the topic says I'm curious what spec people are playing at 80 and why they are playing it vs another, I'm leveling up my rogue now and have been having a lot of fun with it, so was curious about other people's thoughts.
so what do you play and why, are you having more fun as combat than mutilate, or vice versa, are you playing one because the math says its better for dps, or do you just like cheapshotting people in pvp?
not trying to pick a spec yet, still have a long way to go till 80, but I just want to hear from the rogues that have been around why they like what they are

I play combat, the reason why.... well because the best weapons I have right now are swords. Honestly, us rogues have to spec for our weapons endgame. All of the endgame dps builds are roughly even, so if you are a combat rogue, but then you get some really nice dagger drops, switch over to a Mutilate build.
We need to spec to our weapons. Thats the biggest point here.

Im mut. My rogue was my first toon ever in wow so like a nub i leveled him mut from day 1..i know dumb, but i didint know any better at the time. Wolf is right about specing into what ever good weps you get. But i really like mut personally. At 80 you can get 2 LPC's from the au for pretty cheap usually..i had them for a bit til i got the crafted titansteel shanker.

If you're hardcore PvE, you play both Combat and Mutilate. Each spec has distinct advantages and disadvantages for every fight.
I agree with this. I am spec'd for both. Although I use combat mostly to grind daily's and farm mats. I use Mutilate for raiding mostly unless certain fights need me to be combat. I like mutilate better and have equal gear for both spec's.

ok this comment made me curious, could you give some examples of fights where 1 is better than the other?
mostly want to know if I should look into dropping the gold for Dual spec, since I wasn't planning on it as I normally don't pvp, but was also thinking that 1 spec would preform equally well across the board

Before I really understood what each tree really was and the impact it had, I was just picking a talent based on what looks like the most useful at the time. When I got to STV - so figure about L32 - I met someone who invited me to a guild and he asked me what spec I was; I had no idea what the frig that meant but he helped me. I quickly saw that out of about 24 talent points, I put 20 or so into sub ... and I never looked back.
I've since added mutilate courtesy of dual specialization, but unless I feel that I am going to get pressured by a group, I rarely switch from subtlety. The damage numbers aren't always as good (although, give me a fury warrior and/or a fellow rogue and the CP's flow like water with HaT) but not only do I feel comfortable with it, but I've come across a few occasions where Shadow Dance has saved a wipe ... and that is rare with a rogue.
In the end, the rogue's job PvE is to be see and not heard, literally and figuratively. I can't speak for top-level 80 raids just yet, but as long as you complete the instance and don't occupy too much of the healer's time, you will be invited back again.
