Question about the Cataclysm announcement

I'm a bit confused about the recent Cataclysm announcement (if it is the new expansion).
Hasn't this even already happened in the WoW books/history? How are meant to be experiencing it next year if it's already occured? Or is it going to be another Back to the Future With Chromie style event?
Where does the current expansion stand in the history of WoW? Is it ahead of all the novels, or is it not related?

Uh dude, they just trademarked the term Cataclysm. At this point, its unknown why, wait for Blizzcon, they should tell more.
The Sundering took place 11 thousand years ago, so everything in the Warcraft universe (except for the Troll/Spider war) takes place 11 thousand years after this point.
If its going to be part of Warcraft, it might end up being a CoT instance, where we have to go back to make sure everything occurs as it should.
Or it could be a completely new game that has nothing to do with Warcraft.

If the Maelstrom is the new expansion, the term Cataclysm may refer to anything. Maelstrom exploding, Zin-Azshari surfacing, the magic energies of the world diminishing, Neptulon going on rampage, another Old God popping up from the sea...

What I wanted to know was if it was the original 'sundering' which is described on wowwiki. Obviously it's not, and a new event, or not related at all. It would be a nice (Hollywood-esque) way to end the WoW series but that'd very very unlikely given the revenue they get from it, and I'm sure it's been said that level 100 is set to be the limit.

There's still a lot of stuff left for Warcraft. Ending it all with a catalysmic event would be kinda stupid heh. Theres maelstorm, the Emerald Dream, Deathwing's insanity, the elemental Planes, finding the lost members of the Alliance Expedition, final death of Sargeras and the Legion....the list can go on for quite a while.

Heh what's to find out? Naga are the Highborne who sunk with Azshara and accepted the old god's offer of life that transmuted them into freaky snake-elf things, and turned the light of lights, the queen of beauty, into a snaked headed six armed naked naga thing.
