'Cap' means the stat no longer delivers any benefit at all. An example would be hit rating after you have absolutely no spells or attacks that can possibly miss a raid boss. Defense still offers a limited benefit despite diminishing returns even after you reach 535/540.

What you meant to say is... well, I have no logical ideas as to what you were trying to say.
He meant Defense Minimum rather than Defense Floor. Soft Cap is another word that could be applied here as it is to other stats that have a desired minimum with reduced effect after a point, such as dual-wield hit rating and tank expertise.
While some people do get bent out of shape whenever "defense cap" gets corrected, it is important to point out. There are still a lot of tanks out there who fret over having 545 or 550 defense skill because of the
cap
on defense being 540. They need to understand it's just a minimum amount required to be crit immune.

Or 535 for heroics! Assuming we're talking about level 80 content, of course.

'Not
as
beneficial' is not 'not beneficial'. 'Minimal' is not the same as 'non-existant'.
Also I can't help but notice everyone ignored my post about the heroics defense minimum. It's 535 sometimes, people!

There is no cap on def. There is a def FLOOR.
If you really want to correct somebody and seem smart, at least get it right. Claiming that defense has a floor is roughly the same as claiming that there's a cap. A floor function takes the largest significant integer in a term and the remainder (the decimal) is disregarded. The idea of a floor on defense would then imply that defense is ineffective after a certain point. 600 defense is more effective than 540 defense because of the additional block, parry, dodge and miss that it provides.
That'll teach Quest about taking on IT geeks. Unfortunately, you sir, as a stereotypical IT geek, can't seem to look outside your single area of competency to understand what others are saying.
A
floor function
, as you're defining it, essentially rounds down a number to the nearest multiple of significance. However, in general usage (read: commerce, law, architecture), a
floor
(no 'function') represents a minimum point below which a value should not / cannot be.
For example, something may vary between a ceiling and a floor price. A
ceiling
represents the maximum point above which a value cannot / should not be. It does not, as you might quickly argue, represent next most significant integer value.
Quest argued that there is a
defence floor
, not a
defence floor function
, like you seem to believe he argued. In fact, to suggest that there is a defence floor, as you've defined it, would actually be illogical, since there is no measure of significance, nor is it even a function.
What you meant to say is... well, I have no logical ideas as to what you were trying to say.
I would surmise / conclude that you have no logical ideas on this topic, full stop.

...I'll point out that its `defense`, as its been correctly spelled numerous times already in this thread. Not defence. The language we speak is called English. It originated in England. And English people will sometimes (if not often) spell the word "defence."
I mean, we (Americans) won the relevant wars between our now-friendly nations. We can all agree that the language now belongs to us. But Brits have a hard time letting go. Time to move on folks, there's no "u" in "color," and no "c" in "defense."
Now that that's cleared up, I believe we're done here. New thread please.
