Keep on dreaming.
you sacrifice 2 white swing + 2 seal procs to cast 1 exorcism, that's nowhere near as strong as a ret paladin's exorcism.
That alone gives ret the edge :)
How on earth did you come up with that absurd number?
We dont have to sacrifice squat to cast exorcism. The fastest 'viable' weapon has a 1.5 speed.
Wanna know a secret?
Exorcism has a 1.5 sec cast time.
Since we want even slower weapons we're looking at atleast 2.0+ which gives us .5 seconds to play around with and still be able to cast exorcism without losing anything.
But yes you have atleast one slightly valid point, rets exorcism will hit harder, by 5%.
You really cant be trying now, right?

Lol, was that you asking the question, Dobbel? ;)
It'd probably only be one swing, you've got 1 full second to screw it up. Do it enough times, and you'll get a fair bit of practice. I personally don't think it's worth it.
It makes sense to me. I can't see that Blizzard would have left Pret stay more powerful than Ret if it worked - I mean hey, look at the 3.2 patch, our Str scaling dropped back below that of Ret. So even if ilvl 3965 gear came out, we wouldn't get our DPS ahead at the moment. The Prot-healer changes validate that idea.
Still though, realistically, if they come within a shade of decent DPS, then there will be times when raid survivability means that they may be higher in the food chain. You have to admit, the fact that the numbers worked in 3.1 are more than you expected already. If they end up 5-10% behind Ret, then they'll be closer than Ret are to Rogues and the like.

No no, you're misinterpreting. Not asking the meleeDPS to tank (or any dps to tank, for that matter). But if Blizz decides to create a gimmick fight that for whatever reason requires 3 MTs and 7 OTs, just to taunt the boss back and forth, then you're going to want hybrid melee DPS to handle it for the survivability.
Nothing like that exists at the moment (to my knowledge). But that's an extreme example. You can probably find an encounter that requires melee DPS to soak up a lot of damage (eg, Patch with one 'tank') - a protribution pally would be ideal to be in the 2nd threat position, if you've only got the one dedicated tank. Or if your second tank bites the dust. Though not planned, these things happen.
Once Blizzard stops making fights either 'impossibly hard' or 'woefully easy', you're more likely to get borderline cases where DPS survivability might actually make a difference. At the moment though, it's just wipe or win by big margins.
Edited so you don't take me literally on 'wipe or win' and say that there aren't any other alternatives :P

The problem with arena is that you cant take advantage of your team members replenishment buff which may seem like a small amount but it does alot in the long run. Thus as you've experienced you run oom very fast. My only advice would be to keep a low profile and manage your mana until you decide to try and lay down a killing blow.
With the change to BoSanc i would say it's probably the best, especially considering that mana is already a problem whatever extra you can get is definately to be recommended. BoK is probably better if you're not facing any melee opponents since BoSanc only adds 10% stam instead of 10% extra to all attributes.
Rogues would seem like a good choice. Preferably a PvE geared one since between the two of you, you can stunlock a person for ~10 sec thus mitigating a ton of damage allowing the rogue to gear for doing damage instead of being resilient.
Also since you lack any CC the rogue will be able to sap one of your opponents.

The other good thing about partnering a rogue is that they'll be forced to focus on you initially.
Against a healer/'DPS' team, it's business as usual. Incapacitate the warrior/paladin, silence the healer, then take turns interrupting as you burst it down. As long as you down it, the rogue's survivability won't matter, since you're going to be able to solo any melee from thereon.
Prot PvE gear, right? Or Ret PvE gear? You wouldn't have the same survivability in Ret gear (stamina and avoidance and Ardent Defender Resurrection), but you'll have significantly better burst when it comes to taking down a target. I generally use BoK, unless I see that I'm up against melee opponents, then I'll switch for the mana.
Fingers crossed my girlfriend decides to keep playing her rogue to 80... And I'll have a go as Prot DPS with my warrior when the time comes. (Doesn't mean squat at mid 20s... =__=;;)

Try this on for size as ret pvp build it goes deep enough into prot to get the reduced cooldown on stun which can be really usefull and can sometimes save your life
