one thing.. you WILL go oom as arcane.. it's part of the rotation.. Learn to time your spells properly so you've always got a mana gem or an evocation off of CD.
this is the
INTEGRAL
part of playing arcane, and it takes quite a bit of work to master, honestly. Should I go 3 stacks of ABlast, or just two? Should i do an ABarr or fire my regular AM? Do I have time to evocate before
encounter-specific aoe damage here
happens again? and so on and so forth.. Arcane is a lot more fun, imho, to play than fireball or frostfire. It's not as RNGy, it doesn't rely on ungodly amount of crits to pull spectacular DPS, and it's easily as comptetitive, even in ulduar encounters, in a capable mage's hands.
the downsides of arcane?... learning to manage your mana... if you can't get a handle on this, you're SOL... seriously.. With that having been said, even if you're wonderful at managing your mana, you WILL go oom at a bad time sometimes.. It happens.. How you deal with it is what will make you a pro. Your AOEs aren't as powerful as a frost/frostfire mage, and you're twice as likely to pull aggro (since all your threat reduction is in arcane spells)... Don't even bother with arcane explosion.. just pretend it isn't there.
As arcanum said.. your gear is great for arcane... feel free to give it a shot and give it a few days to see if you like it. try it in a heroic or two, or maybe a 10 man raid (something easy like OS or Archavon or something) to get the true feeling for how it goes. Learn when to pop your cooldowns, and when to save them, and when to evocate or when to mana gem, etc etc etc.
