There are many folks who have several level 80s. Currently, I only have one. I have a level 80, a level 70, and a level 52. (I also have a bunch more who are somewhere between 10 and 30).
I have put alot of time into my level 80. The thought of even leveling my 70 through Northrend again scares me. It's not the leveling process. That's not so bad. But the thought of all the reputation grinds, daily quests, and other tidbits seems like overkill. Especially when my current 80 isn't even close to being finished with many of the things available at level 80. I haven't even run all of the 5-mans yet. I'm working on pvp gear, reputation, etc.
Adding another level 80 to the mix to me seems overwhelming. But I don't have alot of time. And yet, I still feel the pull of these lower level characters. I have the desire to see them progress but I know I'll never get them where I want them to be. I am having a hard enough time with just the level 80.

Ditto. I have a level 80 in max possible gear he can get without raiding, all reps I need are done, just need to max his herbalism (again... long story) which i totally don't feel like doing.
And my poor druid is sitting at 74 and I'm dreading doing it all over again. I too have a bunch of alliance alts between 10 and 30.
My answer to this? I started over on Horde, at least until 3.2 comes out. Then I'll go back to my priest and get him all the new emblem stuff.

idk, i guess it's all about what someone finds enjoyable in the game.
i have three 80's and they all have every northrend reputation (including the dreaded sons of hodir) at exalted. the only ones i skipped here and there are the frenzyheart/oracle reps or the ones that are currently insignificant (i.e. frosthold).
i'm currently working on a lock and warrior. i intend to have an 80 of each class ^-^
The only way it wouldn't be is that they have done this a little every day, slowly over time.
most people who enjoy levelling alts have a kind of rotation on who they level and in what order, to gain the maximum benefit from rested exp. and BoA heirlooms make a huge difference! (not to mention this past seasonal event gave u +10exp from killing mobs after dancing at the ribbon pole. that was fantastic ^^)

I can't speak of self experience because I'm in the same situation. Got 1 lvl 80 druid and the rest is lower.
I have 2 lvl 70's a warlock which was my main in BC and a DK bcs I wanted to know what he's like.
Strange or not, the 2nd character that I will make 80 is neither of these two, it's my shaman I've lvled from 36 to 67 atm. When he pops 68 i'll go to northerend and make him my 2nd.
As for how you should gear your alts...
pvp - they have to do on their own, so yeah that sucks... or you can find a high arena team that can boost it perhaps (got little pvp experience myself, so dunno for sure if that can actually work well)
as for pve... if you're in a good guild it may be possible that they will do boosting runs for alts if they've already progressed to the 25 mans to ulduar...
to get in such a guild you must need gear yourself ofc, so focus on one and when you get in, try to get your alts in via boosting runs...
that's how i geared my druid in BC where my warlock was the main... freshly popped alts were taken to kara with the guild to get gear for them so the raiding group gets more versatile...

Mmm, got myself four 80's.
Two are playing in Ulduar with decent gear, maxed professions and all the Wrath reputations at exalted.
One is roughly Naxx 10 geared (there is stuff he can use still there but he could make it through 25 man with little difficulty) with maxed profs and reps.
The fourth has the reputation she needs for the gear and she's just starting the dreaded heroic badge grind.
Basically, I levelled my main to 80 and got him as geared as I could outside of heroics (guild was sucking at them at the time and they just took so long...). I worked on my dailies for rep and levelled professions at the same time.
Once my main was ready for heroics, I picked another alt to play with and levelled him to 80. Same thing again - was running heroics on my main when I could/had time, and getting my alt geared outside of them.
I just carried this pattern on, and am still carrying it on for my fifth toon. As far as the rep grinding goes, yeah it can be overwhelming. But take a step back and ask yourself: "do I need exalted with every faction?" Chances are, you don't.
Dailies I always seperate out. I couldn't possibly do them all all the time. I'd go mad.
Check out whether you need anything from each faction. Decide which piece you need the most/you're closest to getting. Grind that faction's dailies. When you've gone as far as you need to go with your chosen faction, pick another and grind that.
Supplement your chosen dailies with Hodir and/or Argent Tournament (if you need anything from them) as much as possible, giving you 1-3 'sets' of dailies to keep you occupied. Doing any more than that is, IMO, just asking to burn out.
Anyway, that's how I do it and it works out pretty well. It's a comfortable pace and keeps things fairly simple, leaving me enough time to do other stuff. And you know, nothing bad will happen if you don't do your dailies every now and then :D

I find the most important part is actually not to focus on getting to 80. The more it feels like a marathon the more I feel like quitting.
Instead, I just keep my eyes open for fun quests and the next cool piece of gear as I go (and then switch alts when the double xp runs out).
