The Scale of Azeroth

I understand your reasoning, and even though these targets would be undeniably hard to capture, it could still be done, especially with Feathermoon Stronghold due to it's location. And the only reason I left out the Razor Hill/Bloodhoof/etc. is because I would think that an attack on the zone itself would lead to a siege of the city. Once you've pushed that far into enemy territory, it's hard for you to be derailed.
I saw this in Highvoltage's thread on military targets in the theoretical Fourth War.
What got my attention though, is the statement that once you're at Bloodhoof Village, you're so close to Thunderbluff it'd be hard to derail you. Well, how true is that? I know in-game it takes a player just a few minutes to walk from the village to the neighboring capital city, but how far is Bloodhoof from Thunderbluff, 'really?' Two miles? Ten miles? Fifty?
I don't expect a specific answer on the distance between these two points, I'm just wondering if anyone has any idea what the scale of Azeroth is? I can't imagine that a lone man could walk from Stormwind to Ironforge (without the tram or any vehicle) in the time it takes to cook a pizza in the oven.
TL;DR:
Does anyone know the scale of Azeroth? I can't imagine the 'real' Azeroth is as small as the in-game model...

Hmm. this gets me thinking. Can anyone give me the time it took some one to travel in one of the books in a relatively straight line? Please mention if they were on foot, walking, or whatever.

I can't believe there's not more information on this. But I mean, if it's three days from Lordaeron to Dalaran (even considering Lordamere Lake) the 'real' Azeroth would be big. If the horse Arthas was riding was moving at an average of 12MPH (which Google-research suggests is a fair speed) that means Arthas covered
very
roughly 600 miles. Well, estimating on a 24-hour day and seven hours of rest per day.
Just think, if that distance is 600 miles The Barrens must be a few thousand from miles from north to south. The idea that it took the Horde army two months to move from Stormwind to Silvermoon suggests this is about right.
Basically, Azeroth is
HUGE
.

Well think of this heh (and yes ive timed it) a flight from Quel'danas to Booty Bay is almost 20 mins long, thats in game time. One from Teldrassil to Silithus before the connecting flight of silvermoon to CC was about 15 mins, so yeah these are big continents. Even what's left of outlands is huge, during Beyond the Dark portal, they go from hellfire to Bladesedge was like 3 weeks on foot and that was before the destruction.

Given the way it's shaped, I've always figured the
Eastern Kingdoms
were about the same size as
North (and Central) America
.
Flip one horizontally and there's a slight resemblance, well in my opinion at least.

If Azeroth is the size being proposed, then it's very sparsely populated.
According to Wowwiki, there are around 7,000 people in Ashenvale (Horde and Alliance). That's not that sparsely populated when you stop to think that we're talking about a medieval time here. Populations didn't expand to the six billion people that are on Earth like we know it until relatively recently.
This article
on the Black Plague of 1400 in Europe suggests the population at the time was merely 450 million before the plague and about 375 million after.
Edit: Needed to mention that's the
world population
, in case no one linked.

If Azeroth is the size being proposed, then it's very sparsely populated. I mean, in Ashenvale, which is probably a thousand plus miles across, there's... Three or four settlements? Each with just a couple hundred people, maybe?
Just imagine, if the Barrens is over a thousand miles long... Think of how terrible it must be for your character to walk that length. :0
Things are downscaled because it would cause massive lag to see thousands of settlements spread throughout Ashenvale, or to have Ashenvale larger...it's annoying enough to travel across as it is. :P

Except it's really not, depending on where you are. If your in southern Eastern Kingdoms, there are dozens of human settlements stretching from the Blackrock mountains to the edge of the Stranglethorn Vale. Over on Kalimdor, you have the massive ogrimaar then the good sized Razor Hill, then Theramore to the south, Kalimdor would be equal to Australia in population wise; only so many places are actually good to create cities, while other places arent. Also don't forget, the Night Elves believe in living in harmony with nature so for all you know as you walk through ashenvale, there could be dozens of homes above you in the trees.

With a map, Wowwiki's population numbers, and a calculator I get 157,000 inhabitants of all races in Kalimdor. That's assuming no one lives in Hyjal. That actually is kind of sparse when you think about it... But right now I have to go get ready for work, so I'll check this out when I get off tonight, guys.

There might be people in Hyjal, but it's mainly Night Elf's and Tauren Druids of the Cenarion Circle, repairing the damage to the world and trying to cleanse Archimonde's bones of any remaining demon taint.
