I guess that depends on how you define GIMP? In 25man gear I'm doing 3k dps on average while being lazy. Top every Ulduar10/Naxx25 I'm in but that doesn't say much so it's all up to you, really. Seeing as I'm not in a top raiding guild I can't answer for Uld25 and so on but for us "mortals" it's more than fine...just go Frostfire Bolt and not frost.

a) Gear not RNG, most likely. My damage is pretty solid while raiding, sure instant Pyroblast knocks it up another notch (bam!) but it's up to you; crit or dmg?
b) Just stay mobile and wait for the opponent to present an opportunity. Don't get locked down, you'll do plenty of damage with your target constantly slowed. Besides l2CC and you're good to Shatter all you want. Practiceeeee!

Mage dps isn't gimped, Mages can easily break 3.5k-4k in naxx 25 gear. While we are as blizzard says "balanced" its mostly a rotation thing for most mages. Now we are underpowered as far as being on par with other classess yes, but just figure out if you want arcane/ffb/fb spec and get stuff you need for it, all you can do.

My damage is appropriate to my gear level, in line with the other dps classes, and sufficient to successfully raid in Ulduar25.
What else do you want from a DPS class?
Friendly warning: never ever go to the official forums, DPS or class boards, if you want a mostly objective, unbiased opinion about class balance. That's what we have Wowhead for :)

anyway, to the OP.. Mage damage is not "gimp".. we are a bit lulzy in pvp, but that's something totally different.. RMP and RM aren't popular arena combos.. they're seemingly the ONLY arena combos. (I heard that RMP has like double the representation of the next highest combo... i mean c'mon).
My guild is running ulduar 10, and i'm generally top 3 in every boss fight (tossed up between myself, an equally geared lock, and a combat rogue). In "gimmick" fights, i finish first every time (xt, iron council, hodir, etc)
People say that fire is RNGy, and it is.. but that doesn't mean it won't perform well in skilled hands. Whoever told you arcane is RNGy is just dumb, because that's the spec LEAST influenced by RNG. It takes a certain kind of skill to be able to manage your mana pool properly without going oom, and minimizing your dps downtime, but that's not rng.. that just comes with practice. Frostfire is definitely RNGy though, so... -shrug-.. but again, it'll still perform well with a skilled person at the helm.
i damn near made a mess in my pants the first time i pushed 8k on hodir.. :) i wouldn't call mage raid DPS gimp.. the people who are saying that it is are obviously people who haven't run with a good mage in a while.. Feel free to prove them wrong.

By gimp I mean one of two things:
b) Frost can't PvP because their shatter combo is too hard to set up and doesn't do enough damage
These are the threads I constantly find popping up in Damage Dealing
Do not listen to this guy, he clearly has a L2Play issue with frost mages.
Frost is hard to master but certainly doable for PVP. Frost mage is not a class where you can spam 1 2 3 and actually win. Setting up a shatter combo is very easy, just just have to know what your enemys CDs are and how to properly blow them before you unleash your Deep Freeze.

Mages aint gimp...
PVE: We have alot of preassure on ourselfes but we can push out lot of dps if the tank can hold aggro/ not run away with the boss so we are out of range xD. While in naxx 25 gear i managed to push over 5k dps in a 25 man. I often do even more now. still we are not that facemelter dps class anymoer ><
PVP: It's annoying to pvp as mage, you have to focus. but it works fine if you got a good setup and can play the class.

Back in vanilla WoW (pre-BC and WoTLK), the most said/written phrase was "nerf mages". By level 45, 46, I do remember doing more dps than a lvl 60 Hunter. Ok, we were facemelters XD.
Everyone complained, Blizzard listened, but it went too far. A tank DK can out-dps us in ANY fight, even with a crappy gear. A Feral Druid with equivalent gear can too. Something's wrong, I have to say.
Even w/ 25-Men Naxx gear, I still don't manage more than 3,2k. And I'm hit capped in FFB... We're broken!
Still love playing a mage, tho...

Anyone that tells you mage DPS is gimp is looking at the glass as completely empty.
