Does anyone else think that hero classes were just a marketing technique?

The definition of "hero class" changed between WC3 and WoW - not surprising, given that while they're technically the same fictional setting they're games in two completely different genres.
Death Knights are considered to be a "hero class" in WoW because they require a character of a particular level before you can create one, and because they start out at mid-level instead of beginning at level 1.

Yes. It was a marketing ploy. They advertised the hell out of the new "Hero Class" to entice more people to play, making it seem exciting and cutting edge. They also made it to keep their existing fan base interested and playing more. They also did it because when you make One Hundred Trillion Kabillion dollars a month, you can pretty much do whatever you want.
I think the class itself is fun to play, overpowered, and designed well. Anyone can play an okay Death Knight. Not everyone can play an excellent Death Knight. It seems like anyone can play one and think they are amazing because they are overpowered and will generally see big numbers fly across the screen, but you'll know when someone has a true understanding of the class and the class' mechanics. However, the current stigmata that goes with the class makes it undesirable to play and its hard to find groups for dungeons because everyone thinks your a Fail Knight, or a Death Tard, or even worse... a Fail Tard.
So, yeah. The DK was, in my opinion, a huge marketing ploy. Do you think they would have made the class and not promoted it for the expansion? Giving it the title of "Hero" class makes it seem special and gives something for returning players to do, gives something for newer players to look forward to, and gives something for current players to mess around with. To Blizzard, its win-win-win.

If it's their job to make money, and that's all - then No one should QQ when they decide to do something. Chances are for ever QQ, there are 3 new members....
Marketing companies are in the business to make money.
If they loose 1 customer at the rate of gaining 1.5, they are making money.
however, they are also providing a service, and it is to That end where we as players have a voice. Blizzard has Never promissed anything to Us, Correct?
