Abortion Debate

Do you seriously think pro-choice people think abortion is no more a big deal than blowing one's nose?
I think it's based on a paraphrase of an argument by Sam Harris, that more human cells are killed each time one scratches one's nose than when an "x" week old foetus is aborted. Which is somewhat of a fallacy of division.

Do you seriously think pro-choice people think abortion is no more a big deal than blowing one's nose? You've suggested so before. Or are are you just claiming that logically speaking we
ought
to think that, and asking why we don't?
I have trouble understanding the scale.
Explain it to me. How simultaneously
important
and
expendable
is an unborn life?

Some abortions can be performed with the simply swallowing of a pill. Would you consider those abortions to be as meaningful as blowing one's nose?

I was under the impression that cells regenerate and that the cells involved in the blowing of one's nose are not imperative to life.
Quite where the abortion=nose blowing argument has come from is amusing to me.

I find it interesting that if 1 single cell organism were to be found on Mars, the entire scientific community would be screaming that we had discovered "life" on another planet, but many of those same scientists can believe that a fetus before 26 weeks is "not really alive"

Should a cell be found on Mars it would give the possibility of life on other planets and the universe. It would give an answer of sorts for one of the fundamental questions of mankind and potentially advance scientific knowledge.
While undoubtedly a tragedy by anyone's standards, the elimination of the foetus will never have quite the same impact.

I bet the foetus in question would disagree, if he/she could.

Hmm, however, a single-celled organism could sustain itself in an environment, and studies have determined that prior to 25-26 weeks, a fetus has less than a 50% chance of survival outside the womb.
I'm not advocating or arguing against abortion. I don't think I'll ever have a stance on it until I've faced the dilemma personally.

The womb IS the environment. It only dies when removed from the natural environment, and even then, you say it has a chance at survival. Amazing.

I doubt the foetus in question has the rational capability to do so.

Still waiting for an answer for the alien fetus. Would it matter if it was an abduction thing, or if I just had a thing for aliens?
For those not following- this came from another thread where we were trying to figure out what we could debate about with regards to extra terrestrials.

Gah, I just buried the homosexual marriage debate thread. Are you trying to kill me? I need sleep, woman. How about we continue this another day... Monday perhaps?

Ok- I'll see if I can find an alien this weekend to make the debate more relative.

MyTie, you ever considered moving to Ireland? That way your tax dollars wouldn't fund abortions.

I thought about it for the quality beer. I'm not familiar with the Irish government model for abortion funding.

Abortions are illegal in Ireland, but women sometimes travel to England in order to have abortions.
