Your "main spec roll" for an instance or raid is the role you are currently filling in the group.
If the DK had been tanking the whole time, he would be right to roll need on the tank gear. If he was DPS and another player tanked, he ninja'd those, straight up.
I was in a group last night where a druid wearing

against a mage. What's worse is the mage is his guildmate, just dinged 80, and was wearing a blue level 75 piece. The entire group denounced the druid as a ninja, at which point he cursed out the whole group and told US we needed to learn to play.
People get stupid when they see purple sometimes. Think before you roll is a sound rule to keep in mind for every situation.

Main spec roll meaning w/e spec you came into the instance in is what you can roll on is normally applied, though him being a DK not to generalize I am a DK to but it makes sense you wouldn't be aware of these formalities.
