Start running them as a DPS role instead. Pick a high damage one-handed weapon and use as much +Str and +Crit and +Hit gear as you can find, and DPS your way through, if you don't have dual-spec.
At the start of each run, tell the others in your group that you're running to gear up your tanking set, and ask politely if you can need any tanking gear that falls.
Otherwise - level your crafting skills, or save up cash. You can do the Argent Tournament dailies to get the epic tanking weapon - that'll be the best you can find until you start raiding. Failing that - level up your reputation with places like Wyrmrest Accord to get the tanking gear available there.

buying gear at AH? buying craftables? seems very expensive
If you are in any way, shape, or form unwilling to spend gold on your gear... give up tanking now.
You will have the highest repair bills of anyone in the instance or raid. You will be held up to higher standards of gear than anyone you run with. You won't be able to get away with cheaper enchants.
About the only positive gold-wise is that you can laugh at all those poor souls who have to buy Scarlet Rubies. At least your gems are fairly cheap.
Get the Tempered Titansteel. Get the Tempered Saronite and Daunting pieces to fill the gaps. Get your rep up with the Wyrmrest Accord for the chest and the cloak. Don't expect people who have put the effort into assembling their tanking set to give up the drops they need for you.

at 80 when you're just starting heroics, there's nothing more annoying to a healer than when a tank dosn't have close to defense cap. the tank just takes damage too fast for the healer to be happy. my advice, either spend the gold to get enchants and / or gear to bring up your defense, or get a group of guild members who are willing to go through some pain to get you geared up.

Hi,
i just got 80 on my tankadin (first char on 80)
armor is all blue and have 480 def...
thx for the input
To me this seems fine to tank heroics, maybe add some def gems/enchant, but you should be good.
There's no reason you should enter a Heroic without being Defense capped. In fact, I'd refuse to do a run with a tank who wasn't. No matter how good of a player you are, this is one instance where the gear matters more than the player, because there's nothing you can do about those huge hits. It's a matter of gear in this situation.
To the OP: You're going to have to get some pieces of gear. Look up the drops from the level 80 instances (HoL, CoS, etc.). See what you can pick up from the non-Heroics. From there, fill the gap with craftables and enchants. Yes, it's going to be expensive, but those crafted pieces will last you to Naxx at the least, and besides -- you're 80 now! Go do some dailies! :D
If you're in a guild, sure, you could see about going through a few Heroics with a tank that is already geared and won't need the drops, allowing you to roll for them. But this is definitely the round-about way of doing it, and I wouldn't suggest trying this in any pugs.
