So im newish to wow, and even newer to my altest toon the mage. I made an undead and have taken it to lvl 12 atm. Anyway, i just dont really understand which role mages can fill in a group, or anything about them, seems like they are sort of binders?
If anyone can help me out here without being to much of a jerk about it that would be sweet. Even link me a thread or something so i can read up on what to expect from the class would be nice also. I searched a little bit but i didnt really find anything to answer my questions

Welcome to Mage-ism thrakx.
I've been playing for about a year, have a 80 Hunter and DK.
I'm levelling a Fire mage at the moment, just hit 50 yesterday.
Have to say it is the most fun class I have ever played!
Mages dish out alot of damage, but can't take much so make sure you practice 'damage mitigation' (snaring/slowing -> run away -> AOE etc). As you level you'll find that you will have to move around quite a bit and juggle mobs.
And always be aware of what is around you, to ensure you have no mob wandering into aggro radius. If 2 or 3 mobs start pummelling you, you'll be dead before you can press a button.
Stick it out until 20, then it gets better :) Then again at 30, 40, etc.
Look for gear with spell power and intellect - you'll then find yourself killing mobs with 3 shots before they reach you.
Have fun, and all the best!

I've been playing a mage for years now, so here are some
biased
thoughts about 'em.
Our purpose is simple. Kill stuff before they kill us. We're incredibly fragile, but we make up for it with our abilities to do massive (debatable by some) ranged damage.
Unlike most classes, all our trees are dedicated to one role only; blowing stuff away. The only difference between the trees are how you do it, and to some extent, how effective they are at blowing stuff away
To make up for our fragility, we have a lot of escape tools, more than most classes. Remember to use them.
We have the best CC in the game: Polymorph (again, arguable depending on who you ask). It's quick, and can target a large number of mobs. Occasionally, you will be asked to use this in raids and dungeons
Lastly, Mages are FUN to level. Again, this is apparently not a common sentiment from reading to boards, but to me, no classes are as fun while levelling. My 5 or so mages can attest to this. :)
