There's not much about the Maelstorm itself at the moment, hasn't really been touched on since the War of the Ancient's when it was created. What we do know: Ruins of the Night Elf captial city are scattered between Aszhara to the whirlpool, the remains of the Well are at the bottom, the naga are all over the place in there, and the dark god of the murlocs might be there(old post on blizzard website about the murloc race.)

Murlocs have a dark god? Oh I can see the flashbacks of the horrors of the westfall coast already..

That's
all
WoWWiki has to say about it?
You should read the trilogy
War of the Ancients
. It probably puts 90% of what we know about the Maelstrom (and the Well of Eternity which it originated from) in context.

If you're really hungry for Maelstrom stories, canon or not, try looking for some fan fiction. I'm sure there are some out there, though I've never read any myself.

This post is pretty much correct, the maelstrom is just the remnants of the Well of Eternity left over from the sundering, and you should read the War of the Ancients trilogy, awesome book about what happened to the Nelfs when the Highborne and Azshara attempted to summon Sargeras to Azeroth (then one continent, including Kalimdor, Lordaeron and Northrend.)
