Is this a good idea?

I read this on a site. (I have a Vista laptop.)
What I tell anyone looking to buy a laptop is to get one with a good processor, video card, and screen. Then choose the absolute lowest amount of RAM and the cheapest HDD when you order it. Then, get online and buy RAM and a better HDD. You'll get better performance and save a lot of money that way. But since yours is pretty new, you're probably not looking to upgrade. Good luck m8.

What I need to know, is if this is a good idea, or if I should just get a good computer off the bat? Will doing this result in better or worse performance and graphics for the same amount of money?

Edit: I Just thought of another question. Is there a RAM cap? Is there an amount that after which you won't notice an improvement (for playing WoW)? Or is it always the more the better?

As for the first part of your question, I don't know. I'll leave that to someone else.
You're probably not going to need more than 2GB of RAM, and you can't use very much over 3GB if you're running a 32-bit operating system. I personally have 3GB on my laptop, an ATI X-1250 video card, and an AMD Athlon X64 TK-55 1.8GHz CPU. I can run 10-mans no problem.

Okay, thanks for the replies. I have one last question though. What does the processor do exactly? Does a better processor experience better performance, like ram? If not, what is the difference between an expensive and a cheap processor?
Edit: Okay I lied, I have another question. How much can you expect to pay for RAM? Google results are crap. From what I've read, it costs anywhere from $20-$200 per gb. Isn't all ram the same? Or is there better quality ram or what?
Edit: I looked on Tigerdirect, and it seems that the price for ram stays consistent (at least on that site), but the MHz Memory does not. For example: 2000MHz is about $50 per gb. And 133MHz is about the same. So, what does MHz Memory do, and is there an advantage to getting a higher or lower MHz Memory?
Edit: (I know, I know.) Okay, one last tiny question.
for now XP is better. but that will change as time goes on and better drivers are released. DX10 will probably be a must have in the future, but right now no games have it and the ones slated to have it won't come out until the end of the year, and even then they will still support dx9.

So, how long do you think it will take for dx10 to become mainstream? And if so, will WoW
switch
over, or will that wait until WoW 2 comes? Also, how hard would it be to switch over from xp to Vista when that time comes?

Knowing Blizzard, DX10 won't be supported for a while. As for upgrading, I would suggest going straight from Windows XP to Windows 7. Unfortunately, if you decide to do that (or even upgrade to Vista), you will need to do a "clean install" which is essentially the same as wiping your primary partition (which will delete any data you have not backed up).

I still need just one question answered, then I'll let this thread die.
