Hello,
Does anyone know how to write up an assist macro?
I want to be able to hit the button, and have it target my focus' target (the tank's target) and start auto-attacking.
Thank you,
Edit:
If it is possible.. could it be made to look like the normal auto-attack button?

the simplest version is to use a macro such as
/assist focus
If Attack on assist is turned on you shouldn't need to add anything else. You can also choose the ? icon and add #show <insert spell> or #showtooltip <insert spell> at the start of it so that it displays the icon of the spell you use (or the first spell use in the macro if none is supplied).
#showtooltip attack
/assist focus
You can also add to it so that you can use 1 macro to set your focus and attack their target
#showtooltip attack
/focus
/stopmacro
/assist focus
The lines "/focus " and /stopmacro will set your target as focus if you use the button and stop the rest of the macro from executing while any of the modifier keys are held down.

Is it possible to create a macro that assists the main tank without having to manually enter the tank's name every time I go into a new group/raid?
I'd be perfectly happy with one macro that designates a player as Main Assist and another macro that targets whomever the MA is focused on. But using/assist focusdoesn't really work for me because as a melee DPS I'm constantly looking for a new target (after the last one died). Selecting the MA every time I need a new target is just too cumbersome.

target the main tank
/focus
then
/assist focus

But that still requires me to manually target the tank before every single assist. Is there a way to do it in one click?
To use your example, is there a way to focus on the tank (whomever that mat be) and then assist in a single macro/button press?

#showtooltip attack
/focus
/assist focus
if that works, all u need to do is target the tank once at the start of the instance/raid whatever and focus it by holding ur modifier key which u will put in urself as above, either alt, shift, or ctrl.
and then u only have to click the macro to assist the focus no targetting involved other than at the start.

no, once you have the tank set as your focus. hitting a macro that says
/assist focus
would target the tank's target without having to target him again. unless you cleared your focus.

Here is my personnal and best (imo) assist macro
#showtooltip
/assist
/cast YourMainAbility
This allow you to target any mob and to assist whatever the mob is attacking (which should be the tank if he get the initial agro). So you do not have to set a focus or to click on your tank(but you still can). Just start wacking, the macro will choose for you the target :)

My apologies. I thought "focus" just referred to whomever you has targeted. Once I actually tried out the aforementioned suggestion it worked perfectly. Sorry for being such a bonehead.

Hahaha! Quite the contrary not a bonehead at all! I knew exactly what you were getting at because I was looking for the same thing! I am going to try this macro out now! Hope that it still works well.
Because if I am getting this correctly I run retro OS on my pally and sometimes find myself having to jump off the tanks target to run over and help out the healer or another party member that is drawing aggro, then back to the tanks target... that is what you're attempting or that is what I am attempting to find in an assist macro... seems to make sense to me rather than let the group go down. I don't really understand writing macros but I am hoping this one will help solve some of the problem... thanks!
Update: Well I can't seem to get the original macro to work:

Maybe I am missing something or this post is so old that its not working anymore. Perhaps a mod is better and maybe it is a complicated macro that I am looking for where you can switch targets like that with out tabing over and over or adding additional mod mess to your screen.

#showtooltip
/cleartarget
/assist
/startattack
/cast YourSpellHere
Notes: this macro clears dead targets, assists your focus, autoattacks the closest target if no focus is set, then casts your spell
Only flaw I found is if your focus' target is dead it will clear it but if the tank doesn't change targets you will target his dead target again (result failed casts) if this happens to frequently consider clearing your focus until the tank is smart enough to click on a live target

/cast YourAbility
/stopmacro
/assist
/cleartarget
/startattack
/cast YourAbility
Will this work ?
If you have a live target, it will cast YourAbility and end the macro. (As feral druid I want my current target dead before I switch to the next.)
If no live target, it will assist your live friendly focus.
If this gives you a dead target, it will clear it.
If the assist didn't give you a live enemy target, /startattack will target the closest one.
And finally it will cast YourAbility.
