I like the general feeling of the book, the depth of the "Magic" system, the bonds with the Dragons and the general stuff. But yeah, it's amusing :p

The Plague Ship is the only one I've read so far. It was enjoyable, if far fetched.

I love Stephen King (Well, his books) but The Dark Tower was so-so in my opinion. Many of his other books are masterpieces though!

Pullmans books are pretty good, the movie sucked.
Yeah, the movie definetly wasn't worth it and didn't really do the books justice.
I'd certainly assume we're talking about The Golden Compass and stuff, right? I definitely agree, the book was a lot better than the movie, although I would still love for them to make the other 2 books into movies just because it'd be cool to see. I haven't read those in a good while, I'll have to do that.I haven't actually read the books (and only seen like 20 minutes of the movie).
Are they as anti religious as the fundies make them out to be?
Not at all. The books are fiction and take no swings at actual religions. The world is essentially controlled by an extremist religion and the entirety of the book just shows that they are very extremist and they don't want anyone knowing anything other than what they want them to know. I'm sure the fundamentalists would be offended, since this could definitely be taken as a swing at them, but not religion as a whole, imo. ^&*! fundies...
Regardless of your opinion on religion, I'd still recommend reading it, as it is still good fiction.

The religion in the books is Catholicism, iirc, because there was no Protestant Movement.

There is no religion mentioned at all, really, from what I remember. There is a ruling body, who we are assuming to be religious. They know the truth of how and why things work, but they keep this secret and attempt to silence anyone who disobeys. There's never a mention of a deity or worship, simply service to the ruling body.

It mentions John Calvin as Pope iirc, and I'm fairly sure Mary was Catholic.

Currently reading The Dresden Files (on #7, Dead Beat). Also raided the local used bookstore a couple weeks ago and got a really nice condition 1970 printing of Dune Messiah for $2.
I'll probably read Mogworld after I catch up to Dresden Files again, then hit up Dune again.

I can't find exact quotes anywhere just yet. I'll probably look for another few minutes before deciding that I don't really care, but even if they do make mention, that's still not enough to call it anti-religious. The books don't make a point to say religion is bad, useless, stupid, or anything like that. People just get offended too easily.

Game of Thrones on HBO in 18 days!
:D
Biggest worry right now is that I hope they doesn't make this like Spartacus: Blood and Sand, which was pretty much a softcore porno almost . . .
Currently reading The Dresden Files (on #7, Dead Beat).
Liking it so far?

Considering the least @#$%ed-up relationship in the series is between incestuous twins, and it also includes such loveliness as a dwarf and his ^&*!@, or a forcibly-married 13-year old to a massive barbarian guy, I don't think they have many "sexy" options, lol. Although knowing HBO they'll try to squeeze in something with Eddard and Catelyn in the first few episodes.
I can't wait though. I'm so happy that they got a great actor for Tyrion, he's my favorite character. Sean Bean as Eddard is gonna be incredible too.

To the Pullman issue:
First some quotes from Pullman himself:
"I'm trying to undermine the basis of Christian belief."
"My books are about killing God."
"I am all for the death of God."
The book itself contains a Calvinized Catholic Church. Whether that can be called a jibe at Catholicism itself is questionable. The book very clearly and definitely mentions Christianity and very much points at a condemnation. What is clear is that the books are very much both atheistic in nature and anti- organized religion.

I've been re-reading A Game of Thrones in preperation, and the third or fourth chapter is a sex scene with Eddard and Catelyn, soooo . . .

Yeah, this run was actually my second run from
Storm Front
to
Death Masks
.
Slightly looking forward to A Game of Thrones, but I've become jaded by both Legend of the Seeker and Dresden Files (which wasn't horrible, except for being cancelled without an actual conclusion). I realize that HBO isn't your average network and that Martin is actually in on the creative process, but jaded is as jaded does.
I probably should compile a list of my books and actually read the ones I haven't yet. I have the very bad habit of stopping in the middle of a series, then starting a new one...or restarting a different one.
Has anyone read The Codex Alera?

I did get Spy: The Story of Robert Hansson though.

I'm looking forward to A Game of Thrones, but i'm slightly worried that they'll make it into another Spartacus, though they've good got actors so they won't have to make it soft-core porn for free viewers :p
Edit: What's this credibility thingy that is poking for my attention with it's shiny red color?
