So....really regretting purchasing the Divergent series :P Got the box set, and started to read them; when it was all about the main character in the Dauntless faction, it was readable.....then the 'story' started, and kept on going. I'm more or less forcing myself to finish off the third book and then I'll read the fourth so wittingly named 'Four'(cause it's from the view point of the main male protagonist). Seriously, this thing is as hard to read as the Hunger Games.
Edit: I gave up...I can't do it, I just can't do it.
Felt the same, but managed to slog through. Not worth it.
You know, whenever I read the Dresden Files and it's a scene with Nicodemus,
this
is the voice I hear in my head whenever it's his lines(Alpha is the guy with the weapon((aka David Warner))).
Funny. In my head he's more like a cross between Gary Oldman's Dracula and The Matrix's Merovingian. Oily, creepy, ludicrously self-assured, with just a hint of not really liking pancakes.
Because that's just wrong. Everybody likes pancakes.

I've decided to have another attempt to complete the Wheel of Time series starting again from book one. This will be the third time I have started from the beginning and I am hoping that this time I can make it through book 9 which has been the stumbling block in the last two attempts.
Wish me luck...

Book 9 is terrible. So are 10 and 11. IMO, you should just read a synopses of the three and then jump to 12, which is the first one Sanderson ghost-wrote.

Monster Hunter International! Fantastic series, could not put it down.

The Bridei Chronicles by Juliet Marillier, who also wrote the Sevenwaters series that I saw someone suggest on one of the pages. She's a wonderful historical fantasy writer, and I'd definitely recommend any series written by her.

Taking a break from Malazan BOTF and The Dark Tower to finally read A Thousand Splendid Suns. Been looking forward to this for a while, Kite Runner has always been one of my favorite novels.

So finally read the trio of short stories for the Dresden Files known as the 'Bigfoot trilogy'(original I know) but they are very good; all together, comes out to about 84 pages.

Finally read the first three Gunslinger books by Stephen King. Not a big fan of much of his writing but these books are really good. Only problem I have with them is due to the kind of mash-up nature of the Lands it's hard to really get a feel for the world itself. It reads like just post nuclear apocalypse kind of stuff with a western theme rather than heavy metal Mad Max. Still good books, and the 'World that has Moved On' is very well expressed and intertwined, but maybe not the kind of series that I'd go out and buy the next unless there was a deal on it.

Bunch of omnibus out there; check used book stores, should be able to get them for cheap.

The fourth book is, IMO, the best of the series. As I recently said in another post though, to fully appreciate The Dark Tower series, which many consider to be Stephen King's magnum opus, you really should read the stand alone novels that tie in with it.
Most importantly i would recommend:
The Stand-
Widely regarded as Stephen King's best work, the main villain, Randall Flagg appears in The Dark Tower as The Man in Black/Walter O'Dim/Marten Broadcloak.
Eyes of the Dragon-
King's stab at fantasy. Another important appearance by Flagg/TMIB.
Salem's Lot-
One of the central characters in this book, Father Callahan, becomes part of Roland's Ka-tet in the final three books. Also one of the best vampire novels I've ever read.
IT-
The turtle that guards one of the portals described in The Waste Lands makes an appearance. There is also a possible connection between Pennywise and the Crimson King that I wont spoil.
Hearts in Atlantis-
One of the main characters here appears in the final Dark Tower book as well.

Just finished Shattered, the latest of the Iron Druid series by Kevin Hearne. A great read; if you haven't picked them up yet, I highly recommend them!
In a similar vein to Dresden; if Harry was a less-morally-conflicted, 2000 yr old Celt and Mouse could talk back. (or Bob liked sausages and poodles)
Back to ASOIAF, currently on book four... every chapter he dedicates to Cersei I want to kick him in the nards. These chapters are absolutely the hardest thing to slog through.

I always felt that way about Sansa's chapters. They were so damn dull.

AFFC is his weakest piece. I would recommend reading it and ADWD at the same time. They were originally meant to be one volume.

Finally finished book 9 of the Wheel of Time series and I was actually surprised that is wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. I think that the previous times I had got that far I was just fatigued with the whole story and couldn't bring myself to pick the book up so this time I skim read through the preceding 8.

It's 10 and 11 that you have to watch out for. They're pretty dull.
The last 3 pick up significantly (which follows Brandon Sanderson's general writing strat of "Build up at a moderate pace for 3/4 of the book, then have everything happen at once").

If it does become too much of a slog I will give in and just skip to 12 so we'll see how this goes...

Finished the book...yeah it's going to be up there with Dresden and Codex :D Already looking forward to the next book. I love the characters in it; especially Rowl the Cat, who is like Mister except in this verse, people can actually learn to speak Cat so he's a voiced character.
