I went to high school with a band called the Allan Smithee Fiasco. They were like a combination of the Police, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and an electrified Dave Matthews. Great show. Miss those guys.
As far as other local/unknown stuff, in the last few years I've become a fan of a couple of good ones:
Graham Colton Band
— Saw them open up for a Counting Crows / Wallflowers show once, and they held their own. Solid rock band.
Deep Fried — I think they're gone now, can't find them on the Internet. I played a show with them once, great old fashioned rock/blues with a good harmonica player.
I'm sure everyone knows who
Iron & Wine
are by now, but I just got into them so I feel obligated to mention them here.
Josh Rouse
— This guy writes some really beautiful songs. I'm especially fond of his "1972" and "Nashville" albums.
Leo Kottke
— Leo isn't exactly unknown either, but he's not well known among rock and pop fans. He's a fingerstyle acoustic guitar player, primarily 12-string, and he can do things with that guitar that blow my mind.
Madeleine Peyroux
— For anyone who thinks that Norah Jones is modern jazz-singing, I encourage you to listen to Madeleine Peyroux and be proven wrong.
Sam Boxleitner
— Played a few shows in this guy's band. He's brilliant. Hope that link isn't broken.
Also I love Tom Waits.
Yes, for those of you who were paying attention, I was
in
a
band
for a while. It's pretty difficult to convincingly sing the blues when you're a middle class white kid from Los Angeles, but I did my best. That's me in the adorable hat. I was so young...

Vassendgutane
. A norwegian folk-country band who turn every live performance into a party. Seriously. They've gotten platinum on their latest record, I believe, which is pretty darned awesome, considering my ol' pop know them all personally, and even played on a few of their records.
Shame it's only for norwegians though. :P

Selda Bagcan
, a Turkish folk musician discovered through hip-hop act samples.
Leroy
, he did a song for Scrubs back in the day.
Link Wray
, really a great blues guitarist, wrote the song "Rumble" and the "Rawhide Theme"
Giant Panda
, discovered them through a YouTube vid a couple of years ago.
I don't like any of the local bands, either they suck at the instruments they play, have a terrible singer, or are Christian Rock bands. *shudder*
