The server you are on makes a huge difference on the gameplay experience, so spend some time choosing it.

Join a server where you know someone. It will make a HUGE difference.
Look into the "recruit a friend" special that Blizzard has (if you haven't already created an account)
Do your research about the game and use sites like wowhead and wowwiki for information.
Start with two gathering professions. Mining and Skinning or Mining and Herbalism (can be a pain due to tracking system)
Buy the largest bags you can.
Sell everything you find.
Don't buy anything on the Auction House unless it's HUGE upgrade and you have spare gold.

• Always make sure your bags are cleaned up before heading off to quest.
• Make sure you have plenty of food and water without overloading your bags.
• Make sure you repair each time before you head out, having your gear break on you after you down the first mob stinks and it’s a long walk back to town
• Pick up all the quests in the area so you can knock out as many at one time together.
• Look around first THEN move around, there are mobs lurking everywhere that want to eat you, make sure you see them before they see you.
• Be aware of your “aggro ring” basically how close you can get to mobs before they spot you. Some can be avoided all together but you can also grab them when you don’t want to if you’re trying to sneak past and get too close.
• If you have to run from combat run away from areas where there are lots of mobs, roads are generally the safest or back to an area you already cleared mobs from.
• Humanoid mobs will often run away when they are almost dead. If they run to other mobs those mobs will come try and eat you too. The key is not to let them get far when they take off, kill them quick.

Reasonable Configuration Options for Beginners
Information is power. Don't be afraid to spend time reading
Wowhead
,
WoWWiki
, and so on. This will benefit you much more than you will initially realize.
Play every class until level 10 before you choose your main.
Make sure you read the
entire tooltip
for every item, spell, etc. Every word matters.

I would suggest leveling to around 16 with each class. 10-16 doesn't take very long if you're gathering up all the quests in a quest hub (town or village, etc) and using QuestHelper to complete them all. You'll get a little better taste of each class and be able to make a more informed decision on what playstyle you would like to pursue.
I chose to play a mage because when played correctly, we take little damage and blow away enemies. When played incorrectly, we pay for that mistake with our lives (usually). We can teleport ourselves all over the map, which is a real time saver. Plus we have some cool spells that are fun to play with.
Also understand the differences between server types. RP realms are for always speaking in character and developing nuances and traits in your characters. PvE realms are best for new players (in my opinion) because you can level your character without worrying about the opposite faction's level 80 characters constantly turning you into grease stains; that's what PvP servers are for.
