Mimiron encounter...small issue

Kinda small atleast. I tank most of the content, but I dps for this stage. I know my health is a little low for melee (22000 raid buffed) in my PvE gear, but, I am trying to figure out how I am getting one shot. I do an excellent job staying behind him during his second phase and take minimal damage. Every single time in phase two, I am getting hit with something while he is FACING AWAY from me, hitting me for 20k +. I finally checked the log because I thought the first time was a glitch, but it turned out I am being hit by his barrage.
I was under the impression his barrage only shoots forward. Why am I getting hit behind him?
BTW. just to add, to the pallies out there. Don't tell anyone a pally can't tank him due to CDs. Had three people tell me that, so I tanked him on one attempt and easily survived the proton blast. People seem to be stuck on the BC capabilities of prot pallies, and I am not sure why.

If you are a prot pally and you are withstanding the blast w/o a cooldown, your healers are doing a great job keeping you up. A pally is not the ideal choice to tank this alone.
This is the point I am trying to make. Pallies DO HAVE CDs to burn for plasma blast. We have something that acts exactly like shield wall, but has a 2 min CD instead of the 4 min CD of shield wall, and, it's called Divine Protection, and we have a bubble.
How odd DCCAB.
We use a prot pally as a MT for all of our Ulduar work, including non-kiting of Vezax and most of the Hardmodes.
He Bubbles the first, hand of something the second, and - if Mimiron is still alive for the 3rd then our Holy Loladin helps him out.
Mimiron is one of those fights where all tanks can handle it equally well.
Bubbleing drops all threat, so I never thought about doing this. We could always give it a shot. I will just have to taunt him immediately after bubbleing.
you 100% sure your actually behind him?
and not standing in within his circle?
Perhaps this is the problem. I know I'm physically behind him, but how far, I am not sure.
I'll put some distance next time. Being close makes it easier to avoid being hit when he's rotating, which is why I don't get too far out. Then again, if I'm dead, it doesn't matter either way. lol

You seem to have it straightened out already, but as a melee on this fight, I've died a couple times to the barrage in the same way. So unless you fail the make-sure-your-spell-graphics-are-high-enough-to-see-the-"rocket's-red-glare" check, just back up a few steps and you'll be ok.
He has a pretty good sized hit box so you dont' have to be too terribly close. :)

if you mean the cast his blast where he 1 shot everybody who is in front of him i know the answer:
I had the same problem on my druid.. when people said me his blast is deadly
in FRONT
of him and in
5 YARDS
of the boss. So stay max range like you probally did on KT in naxx :D.

We haven't attempted him again since I made the thread. I'll let the guild know what you said though. Not just in front of him, but a few yards on all sides of him.

Using Divine Shield does not drop any threat, the boss will simply ignore you because you are immune to all damage, and attack the 2nd person on his agro list. Taunt will not get you around this. Once the bubble expires or is canceled the boss will return to you assuming you are still top on threat. However, it is clearly not suitable for avoiding the plasma blast.
All tanking classes have at least one cooldown that can effectively mitigate the plasma blast, and there are also some other cooldowns which can help offset the damage such as Hand of Sacrifice, Pain Supression and Guardian Spirit for example.
We just rotate 3 tanks using their best cooldown before the boss goes to phase 2.
As for the issue with getting killed in phase 3, as people have said, watch your range, you can still melee him from the outside of the circle on the floor around him so theres really no need to enter this area. Also make sure you are not dieing to rockets.
