A matter of night elf facial markings

I've been looking around a bit for an explanation for (what I assume are) tattoos on female night elves' faces.
With the barbershop, we now know that the markings have names. Has anyone come across a place where the cultural significance of these is discussed?
As I recall it from WC3, it's actually Malfurion who has a tatoo on his face... Any thoughts?

I can't find anything about them on the Wowwiki so this is purely speculation.
I think that - since histoically there have been only preistesses of Elune (WoW only having priests to allow both genders to roll the same thing) - that they are a way to praise Elune and each variation might have some kind of meaning behind it.

Don't know if I want to ask "what were you thinking about?"

Come on, tell. You can't just say something like that and keep it a secret. :)

They could be a certain "clan" of Night Elves. Like, you know how the Night Elves are brought up communally? Maybe that community is like a tribe, and the markings give away your origins. The females would only recieve them because traditionally, men went to sleep for years while women were priestesses and sentinels.
Well, it's probably female-only because Blizzard couldn't be arsed programming tattoos as well as facial hair.

So there is really no official explanation to those tatts?
Anyone who uses them for their night elves? I recently realized that I use only 'serpent', which is the least ostentatious.

I don't play a Night Elf, but I'd probably use one of them if I did.
