I have played this hunter on an off for a year. The other day I decided it was time to try some to finish this guy.
MAN is northrend different.
I got to the tundra and fight and claw and hope for every kill. I did get to last rights and got the Fury of the Raging Dragon weapon..Didn't seem to help much.
I have some junk quest gear and getting some frostscale eq. But this BM build just seems to not work for me. I have a bear and using the talents, glyphs and advice from the stickies but I dont' seem to be doing anything. 300 dps and bear is doing about 175. HUH ?
I think a pally or dk naked can do more than that.
Is BM a build for 70-80 or should I be doing something else.
It was always slow and steady with a pet in the game before wotlk.
Now I just feel that if I go out and try to really kill something I am out of mana, if I just sting and steady shot I use 20-25% of my mana and take forever to kill something.
I even tried to use viper and shoot all my bigger stuff, about the same damage and time to kill something. This is not what I was expecting.
What should I do?

You autoshoot and don't use any special shots? Get boring at all?
When I leveled through Northrend I was overwhelmed at first but after a few quests I got the hang of it (having done the quests on three other characters previously also made it easier). I was BM specc'd all the way to 80 and I did the standard build, and my rotation was simple - Hunter's Mark macro'd with pet attack and kill command, serpent sting, arcane shot, aimed shot, steadyx3 and mob was usually dead. Once I got low on mana I would switch to Viper and just pewpew away on one mob with no special abilities and I would regen mana to full by end of fight. I also played on a PvP server, so world PvP gank fests were something I had to learn to avoid as a lowbie hunter.
If I had trouble with a tougher mob I would use the Beast to increase dps and blast the mob down harder. I also leveled with a Bear to 76 and Gorrilla till 80. The main thing is to make sure your pet is specc'd properly and you allow the pet to gain aggro before blasting. A simple m-dir will solve any problems with aggro as will feign death.
Post your character sheet so we can get a better idea of what may or may not be your problems.

You are complaining about low DPS and you aren't even using skills?
Right... I believe you play as Troll, right?

Yep, as was BC compared to azeroth. The mobs are a bit heavier and harder to kill, but overall, you should scale with it just like before.

Well, it depends on what you had before. It might not seem like it, but unless you were walking around with BiS pre WotLK, it should have been a good upgrade over anything from BC. I seem to remember my first blue weapon was tooltip around 30 or more dps than my old BC xbow.

That sounds totally false. Sounds like you may be running a dps meter while you are soloing and questing, which doesn't really make sense. To optimize dps on a meter, the fight has to last a while for you to setup stuff. Most single mob pulls while leveling up go down too fast for that to happen.
I think a pally or dk naked can do more than that.
No. A paly or DK equally geared probably will rival what a hunter can do, yes. But if you aren't playing to have fun with the class you are playing, and are truly only worried about getting max dps from a class, you will never be happy imho.

BM isn't about burst. It's about slow and steady, and that's why it's a good leveling spec.....it gives you the best tank you can have (pet) and allows you to grind without much downtime. There are ways to combat this.......pull more than one mob and volley them down. Otherwise, simply switch over the viper when you get low on mana, and within no time you should fill back up. Hunters are rogues (yet) or DKs, they have a mana bar (for now). Be aware, that when you switch to viper, your mana regen increases, and you also gain mana back with your attacks. So pick on something to the side, burn it down with just a sting and auto, and your bar will fill back up.
I even tried to use viper and shoot all my bigger stuff, about the same damage and time to kill something. This is not what I was expecting.
This is wrong. Viper decreases your damage by 50%, 40% if spec'd. Using all your bigger stuff will not increase your damage, because you are in viper. Instead, it will likely offset your regaining of mana, because you are spending it as quick as you get it back. Use a sting (viper if it's a caster) and auto it down. You can even glyph arcane to give you some mana back when you use it and the target is SS'd.
What should I do?
Likely use Arcane shot instead of steady, as steady really isn't a great boost to damage, but a drain on mana. Only when you need to burn something fast and need to use all your "stuff", should you resort to using it imho. Mark the target, send the pet, misdirect to the pet if you have agro issues, serpent, arcane, auto........your damage will eventually get much better as you gear up and gain levels. You are at the beginning of this content, much like every other content in the game. You are not going to explode stuff when you are 58 entering HFP, and you didn't explode stuff at level 1 when you entered the world. =)
It's not flashy, it's not super duper fast, but it's the best leveling spec there is if you ask me. Your pet can handle more, and you should have less downtime if played correctly.
good luck! and ready stickies all you can.....

I usually just use autoshoot and let my pet do most of the work when I'm working on quests. This way I still have mana for a world-pvp fight, or incase there are adds to my pull.
Allright - stop being mana-greedy, and leveling will go so much faster. You need to use your skills not only because that's your class, but also because you need training for endgame raiding. Beast Mastery doesn't mean send in pet and wait. Maybe you can do this, but really - spending your mana and regaining it with Viper yields a higher experience rate.
