Anyway, a little undercutting is fine but it's bad business for everyone selling when you massively undercut or don't pay attention to the current prices.
Lawl... check out greedygoblin.blogspot.com sometime. The guy undercutting you by 20g is making a killing.
Plus in the big money market (Flasks, Gems, Arrows etc) If you dont undercut your stuff aint gonna sell period.

Then you're not who I was talking to. You and everyone else has a right to sell items for whatever price they want. I could farm all day and sell everything for a copper and I would be perfectly well within my rights - the only drawback would be the profit I would deny myself. Everyone complaining about undercutting fails to grasp a fundamental truth about free markets.
Comparing WoW's free market to the Free Market of many of today's countries is like comparing WoW's fight system to fighting in real life. No matter how similar they can be, they will never be even remotely the same. For instance, in real life if I own a store and I find a competitor seriously undercutting me, I can call my cousin in city/state/federal government to have the land your store sits on rezoned. Or maybe I want to be ruthless and call an old high school buddy that got into gangs and he and his friends can rough you up a bit. Or there's the option of calling in a favor from an acquaintance working at the news and seeing if he can't find (or make up) some stuff for a smear campaign. These things just can't be done in WoW. Therefor, a lot of AH users rely on those around them to follow an unwritten set of rules to keep AH prices seriously over inflated. (Note: If you're taking a lot of this post seriously, then you're reading it all wrong. Except maybe the part about over inflated AH prices).

I don't get it...
people moan about people drastically undercutting and "destroying the market"
Just buy the stuff that's on there too cheap and re-list it... you'll get profit and your original auctions are still sensibly priced.

Well by undercutting you are doing a good thing for the consumer.
The guy who messaged you is obviously not worried about consumer, only about their profit. I would say consumer > competitor.
If you upset them enough to quit selling, good for you. If you didn't, than better luck next time.
All is fair in love and war, and AH :)

People rage because they don't understand one thing...
It's just
pixels
.
I have never seen a 'good' auction house in any MMO and I don't think WoW will ever be the exception.
People need to get over it.

Here's the minset of most people that use the AH; how Greedy can I be versus, what's resonable to make.
Learn to know the difference and you'll make plenty of gold selling items.

The only problems I have are the idiots who undercut by large margins and screw up the market.
For example,
Scroll of Enchant Bracers - Exceptional Intellect
. The material cost on this averages 50g, and according to Allakhazam that's also the average price across all realms that players collect data on.
I was leveling my enchanting and posted the scrolls on the auction when there were currently no scrolls of this variety on the market. I posted for 35 bid and 50 buyout.
Undercutters make their way in and the first person behind me posts for 20g
buyout
. The current price, a month later, is fluctuating between 10g and 15g... roughly one fifth the cost of creation.
One could argue that the item may not be very popular, and thus have a lowered cost as a result of low demand. However, this is the case with many scrolls that are even considered to be comparable with best in slot enchants.
I have no issues with people who snipe at prices, thus keeping a relatively close average price. The idiots pricing at gouging rates are those who annoy me to no end.
