this is a purposeful change and DP
is
a viable alternative but it's not something that should be done on a whim. DP has some serious drawbacks and should still only be chosen if you have some good reasons and sim results to back it up.

A better question would be...Why the hell are you using dark pact?
DP is viable, especially at higher gear levels.

yeah, that's a bad reason to use DP.
if you're using DP still start with a rank1 LT

Itll oom your pet, which in turn will lower your DPS, lifetap however has no limit, and instead requires a tiny dot from one healer to cover it and your good. The felhunter won't go oom (
iFH
) and affliction is pretty much self sustainable (i.e. doesn't need a HoT to recover from life tap) which makes me wonder why dark pact is even in the affliction tree at all, makes more sence in the demo tree (with some alterations) which is draining mana like a mad man and has no self healing.

Dark Pact is good in situations where you need mana but cant afford to lose HP.
I macro DP as a shift modifier to my LT. And Alt Modifier for LT(Rank 1).

you're levelling? use a levelling spec. end game specs and advice are tailored fairly specifically for end game content. a level 80 spec will do fine for your last few levels but our advice to you would have been much better if you'd made it clear you were talking about levelling.
that said, your pet shouldn't be tanking anything, you should.

Not meaning to hijack your post, but I have a few questions on the topic here. First I have been following the "Dots and You" post from Elitist Jerk website. So far I have done well in my opinion with dps. With that said, I have only been on my first raid last night. lol
I have been using both dark pact and life tap to fuel my mana pool while running endless heroics for gear and badges. I have noticed that we rarely stop long enough for healers to drink to full mana. Thus I never drink as an affliction due to these two spells. I never take pet's mana below half and I never see him run out with Imp Felhunter.
Can you folks give me the math to support dropping Dark Pact and taking up 2/2 Imp Life Tap? Reason is I am about to change to another spec I think might be better then the one I am currently using. Modifying now before I spec it would be more cost effective. lol
I am 80 with decent
gear
considering I have only been on 1 10 -man so far. haha The spec I am about to use is
here
.
Thanks in advance.

maths? there really isn't very much of that. there isn't a great difference in output between the two options, it's more down to playstyle. i can tell you that healer mana is not at all a consideration.

Naah, you got to top your pet's mana up with lifetap because of mana feed, using dark pact would take it's mana off it and it would be oom within minutes.

I am admitting being new to warlock high end. But this doesn't make sense to me. If you are deep enough to have dark pact, why would you also have mana feed in the Demo tree? Also if you have dark pact, why would not NOT have Imp Felhunter? Every spec I have seen in the past 2 updates has had Affliction and Destro together, never Demo. What am I missing here? lol

my guess is he was talking about the idea of DP being moved into the demo tree.
iFH isn't enough to keep the mana coming in, or at least it is but only if you DP once every 30 seconds like clockwork. as soon as something interesting happens/ is required it gets more difficult.
