They will not work past level 80. It's already been stated by Blizzard and there's many posts about it.

Plz someone state it clearly that heirlooms will be still useful between lvl 1 and 80 in cataclysm, just like in wotlk, cos ive already bought everything for my future worgen alt.

They will likely change the Heirlooms so the +Experience stat on them stops working past level 80.
From then on, they become '80 blues' that will be replaced around level 93 odds. This is actually a pretty accurate guess. It is currently our intention that the heirloom items will stop at level 80. Additionally, we are looking into ways to prevent the exp bonus from working when leveling past level 80.
and again here
Heirloom items specifically state that they go from levels 1 to 80 so we don't currently plan to make the currently available items auto-update to go to level 85 in the next expansion.
As for the experience gain, nothing is set in stone yet, but I think it makes sense that we won't want players to get a 20% exp bonus when leveling to 85.

Note, you are asking just for thoughts here, so in that sense, yes, we have thought of this, we have also thought of providing new heirloom items that must be earned at level 85. There are a lot of ways to go with this, nothing has been determined though.
To help level from 1 to 80. These items help a huge deal in this aspect so for the one purchase you can get a lot of mileage out of them already.
Things can possibly change, but currently there are no plans to change how the existing heirloom items work from levels 1 to 80.
Also, this thread was 3 months old before your nerco'd. BZ

....Did either of you nerco'ers read the above posts? The exp will work until 80, then it turns off; so worgen and goblin levelers have the same chance for being first after 80. And yes, new Cata heirlooms will be available; some from crafted guild perks, others, from the point system at 85.

The only new heirlooms in Cata will be the helms and the cloaks, so go ahead and buy the current ones anytime you want.

Heirloom and especially the weapons are overpowered and worth keeping. Now in the end of WotLK we may have forgotten what levelling with a white or green weapon is like. Believe me: it stinks.

will Cata release a brand new set of 1-85 heirlooms for shoulder, chest, etc making the old ones obsolete?Signs so far point to a no.... now they might appear later in the expansion like the chest pieces did for Wrath.

Kinda sad that some players are more worried about faster levelling, rather than taking their time experiencing the new quests and other content in Cataclysm.

Always happens heh; people just want to get to that end game content and screw everything else. But that's good; the speedsters will be through the zones and gone in the first week, leaving it to those of us who want to level slowly. Of course, my non-'mains'(Hunter and Warrior) will still be in Northrend, completing the zones for the Loremaster and getting exp without a lot of contest heh.
