Didn't they do this on the PTR around 3.3 then remove it claiming it made us overpowered?

I'm sure this has probably been discussed to death and possibly already thought of, but i just had a random thought how to fix Vanish.
Divine Shield removes all debuffs and dots, and makes you immune to damage for a few seconds. Why not give rogues a buff that lasts for 2 seconds when they Vanish that has the same effect? and if it's an issue of getting unstealthed regardless, i'm sure it wouldn't be hard for blizzard to tune stealth so it cannot be broken if no damage is taken.
Just a random thought.
Welcome to 3.3.0 PTR.

The original "fix" prevented incoming damage from knocking you out of Stealth for one second after Vanish (later changed to half a second). It never prevented you from taking damage, it was largely just meant to prevent you from immediately losing Stealth because something that should have missed landed anyway. It didn't really allow you to do anything that you couldn't have done before, like Vanishing through a DoT tick with proper timing so I still don't understand why they reverted the change.
With that said, I could never in a million years imagine Blizzard adding a pure immunity component to Vanish to get it working properly. It's likely doomed to stay broken forever because Blizzard likes to not make sense.

I use vanish now as an evading skill, so blizzard shouldnt bull*!@# me about that the immnunity would cause evading.
I use vanish to evade stuff like tear gas (PP), Belowing roar (Ony), whiteout (Voa), ....
Even used it for Saurfang to evade/bug mark.

As my rogue isn't 80 quite yet I haven't had the opportunity to use it in such situations.
In PvP, however, I do not think I can keep count of how many times vanish has been broken immediately due to spells or ranged attacks that were already in flight or slightly later due to pets continuing to follow and attack after vanishing, including at long ranges (80 - 100 yards).
Blizzard is very concerned that Vanish will become too powerful so it still exists in it's broken state. It isn't that Vanish can't be fixed, it's that if vanish is fixed in the 'wrong' way it will be too strong in PvP.
It wouldn't be too strong in PvE because they can make boss effects cut through that short immunity similarly to how
Dispersion
does not reduce incoming damage from most boss mechanics. Though they may be trying to avoid making another spell act differently in PvP and PvE.

Yeah I find myself running out of AoE's for a good second before hitting vanish and it still won't go off. Fail.
Oh well. Good thing I'm Sub so I get two chances at it =D

Pets, Mirror Images, and Hunter auto-shots are what irk me the most. It seems Mirror Images do not lose their target after you Vanish; Warlock/Hunter pets will chase you down and either A) attack you, popping you out of stealth, or B) sit on your rear end so the Warlock/Hunter knows exactly where you are (assuming you were lucky enough to Vanish away from the myriad of lollagshot damage that they send your way).
A short immunity would be nice, but is definitely not foreseeable... sad face ;(
Now, on the other end of things, I'm sure the Warlock in full wrathful I was just fighting in this BG was cursing his brains out as I was timing my Vanish perfectly and evading most of his spells.

For those of you looking for a real vanish fix that you can do yourself, Please see this macro:
/cast Archmage Vargoth's Staff
/stopattack
/cast vanish
It significantly raises vanishes' reliability. Other than that, I can't help you :(

How...? How do you know exactly when he hits 80%, doesn't the avoidance component only last like half a second?
For starters Tear Gas has like a 5 second cast time so as long as you're paying attention it's pretty hard not to see it. Second, I couldn't tell you why it causes those listed abilities to miss, but I assume it has something to do with them being targeted attacks that only affect things on the boss's threat table (not a blanket AoE, but a specific AoE if that makes any sense).
Vanish doesn't have any kind of "immunity" and it never has. It was slated to get an early-break-immunity (you still took damage, but being hit immediately after Vanish wouldn't break Stealth), but Blizzard scrapped it at the last second because it was an "overpowering" change. It's a little silly because a lot of the things they apparently thought the immunity would make possible are already possible with half-assed timing anyway. But maybe I'm a little biased since one of my class's defining abilities hasn't worked properly in years..

Focus target on PP and when he's at 4.8/5.0 cast, you vanish.
This gives you a chance to dps down the boss or a slime for 20 seconds.
There are millions of fights where you can do this.
You can even vanish the grip pull from sindragosa, just need really good timing.

I am so going to have to try these on my next raid! I usually just use vanish during burn phases to activate overkill but i'm going to try this instead next time
