It's when a player in your raid damages another player in the same raid.
This is possible with debuffs such as
Static Charge
; the damage from them is considered to be done by the player with the debuff.

The devourer in FoS does
this
, so everyone should stop dpsing.
Myself and my guildies like to abuse this move. Especially if we're all DPS, it comes down to a competion/RNG roll on who will die first.
Lawls usually follow.
Best to not be stupid if you don't know anyone else in your party though.

One time in a group, I happened to be checking out the different tabs in Recount and I saw a warlock as the only one on there. I guess Life Tap counts as friendly fire too? Or maybe a different spell IDK about... XD

It also used to count the damage done to yourself when using Seal of Blood/Seal of the Martyr as a paladin. It counts self damage too.

Recount is root of all evil...well maybe not evil...but of failing classes. It seems fewer and fewer people know how to play their class to aid the greater good of the party/raid...it's all "look at my dps" and "hey the healer should have been able to keep me alive through 50 ticks of standing in the fires of hell"

This will comeback to the gearscore debate though. See Gearscore and Recount are tools. Good tools
IF USED CORRECTLY!
With Recount you can not only check Damage Done and Healing Done, but the Overheals Done, Damage Taken and as mentioned before Friendly Fire.
Not to mention it's good with finding out who has been attacking what, (good for those DPS that don't understand WTF target switching means) and an individuals most damaging attacks which can help you piece together someones rotation, and if they are doing said rotation wrong.
The problem is people focus too much on the Damage Done and Highest DPS to notice these other cool little features.
So no, Recount isn't the root of all evil, it the people abusing it. Much like a gun, it isn't the gun itself thats evil. It's the person thats holding it.

Soul Link can also be counted as Friendly Fire I believe.

Here is a fact I made up: 94% of people that QQ about Recount and Gearscore are scrubs that think they are better then they really are...
Ouch was that suppose to hurt..much like your dps I didn't feel a thing.
My comments, were suppose to be read a little tongue in cheek.
I was just trying to state that recount can lead to poor playing habits...not "EVERYONE"
When players use recount for self evaluation that's one thing..when people post it to exalt themselves or demean other players during a run..that's quite another.
It leads to healers over healing and running out of mana...it leads to players not putting debuffs on bosses..it leads to dps not concentrating on adds. I've seen this happen often enough to ban it from my guild runs.
I so hope blizz decides, in Cataclysm, to go back to creating runs that require people to know their class beyond simple spamming. Rogues/mages that actually have to CC..healing debuffs that force healers to manage their mana...adds/bosses that stun dps for a duration for pulling..etc.
Forcing players to work as team instead of a party/raid of individuals.
Then we will see who the scrubs really are.

I think you can grasp the fact that dps doesn't impress me in these days of 15% ICC buffs and breast feed epics.
You want to know what I mean by pro...look at this video from back when.
When you needed to work as a team.

And you walked uphill both ways in the snow, too.
DPS doesn't impress me either, but it has nothing to do with the fact that the game has changed from the "good" old days. DPS is a measurement of how much damage you do, and is a very small sliver of the overall picture of the quality of a DPSer - which was just as true then as it is now.
