No no. Just let it go. Talk about feminism.

Maybe I should get more involved in these discussions.
Speaking of passive aggresive.
Because you think, somehow, I shouldn't be an involved part of this community?
I had a message to put out, on feminism and the whole slutwalk movement. I'm disappointed that some people are choosing not to care about that, especially the person that I was responding to, who I certainly empathised with because I shared his viewpoint on the issue not too long ago.
I don't suppose you'd care to respond to that instead?

Nope, you have every right to be involved in a discussion.
But you made a comment about MyTie being passive aggressive, by making a passive aggressive statement.
Nothing more...just pointing out the obvious.

That's because you think that me wanting MyTie to read what I'm saying is somehow aggressive.
Anyway, like I said - would you care to actually respond to the topic at hand, rather than continuing to derail things?

Has anybody ever read The Yellow Wallpaper by Charloette Perkins Gilman?

No, I've never heard of it - what's it about?

A woman's husband holds her prisoner, and she goes insane. The book eludes that all women, or at least, hordes of women are in the exact same position as her. The idea is that women are held prisoner by men in society.

Hmm. I'll have to pick it up once I'm finished with exams for the year.

Sounds like a gem. I'm glad to see higher education is preparing the coming generation to be productive and intelligent.

It's a short story, no need to go buy anything, just look it up online if you want. There are actually some clues that she may have just been insane all along and that the house she was trapped inside was really a sanitarium (bars on the windows, rings on the walls, etc).
But yea I'm using it in one of my finals, and it made me think of this thread. CPG was one of the first really big feminist writers, back in a time when it was very difficult for women to get published (she was also a fairly outspoken racist, but that's another matter). The story can actually be a little bit chilling when you think of the connotations, about how back in the day this is how many women felt, especially those who lived in the Little House on the Prairie type of situation where they literally had nowhere to go besides their own kitchen.

We read it in literature class. It's by far one of the most disturbing pieces I have read. It really sticks with you... I haven't read it in over 4 years but I can still remember it perfectly.

“What’s the worst possible thing you can call a woman? Don’t hold back, now.
You’re probably thinking of words like $%^&, *!@#$, ^&*!@, #$%^ (I told you not to hold back!), skank.
Okay, now, what are the worst things you can call a guy? &*!, girl, !@#$%, pussy. I’ve even heard the term “mangina.”
Notice anything? The worst thing you can call a girl is a girl. The worst thing you can call a guy is a girl. Being a woman is the ultimate insult. Now tell me that’s not royally @#$%ed up.”
— Jessica Valenti, Full Frontal Feminism: A Young Woman’s Guide to Why Feminism Matters
Just putting this here because it's very true.

Calling a woman manly is also an insult. Don't believe me, try it. Go to the supermarket, and start calling women "manly". You'll get your butt kicked. People don't like being called what they are not. Women don't like being called men, and men don't like being called women. No surprise there, and not a logical reason to suppose bigotry.

Except that when you call a woman manly, what's usually meant is "you look like a man". It's not that men are, by default, a bad thing to be. Not so the other way around. It's not very difficult to understand that distinction.

If you say so. I would think it would be a bad thing for a woman to look like a man. I wonder what the survey says there.

Depends on the woman in question, and what the man looks like :P
You two would bend over backward to defend your backward logic.
"Oh hey look at this thing that only applys to women. That's so patriarical."
"Actually, that applies to men too."
"Oh. Well, uhm... no, sometimes, uh."

Strawman. The issue isn't that it's a bad thing for a woman to look like a man. The issue is that the actual insult is that the man acts/resembles/portrays a woman, not merely that they look like a woman, which is all that you're saying.
