So I got up to work on a project this morning, and it went much faster than I expected, so I've been spending time reading
a report from the World Bank
, and something struck me as odd. There is a section talking about gender inequality, and it has some graphs that show the female to male ratio for primary, secondary, and tertiary education in either low income, lower middle, upper middle, or high income countries (page xxxvi labeled page 11 if you're reading it). The ratios are around 100% for primary and secondary education in countries other than low income countries, while low income countries have lower levels of primary, secondary, and tertiary for women. Obviously this seems like an inequality that might be desirable to be addressed, however there is another inequality that exists in the graph - for upper middle and high income countries there is a significantly higher rate of women in tertiary education then there are men, however there is nothing written in the analysis explaining it. My problem seems to be the feminist attitude that exists that seems to suggest there is a problem if men are better off than women at something, but if women are better off then there isn't a problem at all. It seems like it should go both ways - we should be encouraging more younger boys in schools to work hard in school and eventually go to college to even out that ratio.
It just seems odd to me. I guess because women have been oppressed in the past, they find it acceptable to have an advantage and not acceptable to have a disadvantage (similar to affirmative action for minorities), however there isn't that level of oppression in more developed countries today, so I don't understand why such an inequality is allowed to exist without action taken to change it.

Feminists who are supposed to be anti-sexist are (usually) some of the most sexist people on the planet.

Gigantic generalization.

Today in USA the requirements for some jobs are less for womans than men, black-only clubs ARE allowed but white-only clubs are somehow more racist, people are afraid to fire people that belong to minority groups because they are called racists.
White male doesn't understand the colossal privilege he has? I'm shocked.
