Incredibly. Music is one of the best points in the game. Such as in SSBB I always turn the music to different songs.
I have never bought a game for its soundtrack, but I have bought a soundtrack from a game.

a game can have an amazing soundtrack and be a terrible game (Final Fantasy 8) I disagree, 8's story may not have been equal to 9's, but it was still good; but yeah, the music makes or break the game.

Gaming soundtracks will help you focus on what the objectives are. There are games out there that contain repetitive music, which is an easy way to get annoyed. If you play games with missions, and all of them have music fitting the session (ex: action, fast music) then it will keep you on the right track.
If you play a type of grand theft auto game, while you are in a chase, then you will need music that will get you ready for a long chase, but if that track continues, then you will get bored.

This. It's one of the reasons I really like Golden Sun =P

I have like 100 games across the consoles of ancient and new, so music is obviously one of the top points to a video game.

Final Fantasy has some good tracks (Chocobo's Dungeon is epic for that, stole all the best music and remixed it). However, saying that metal gear solid has bad music? I question the OP's taste. Some people are fans of country music, doesn't mean its good music.

Nothing wrong with FF8 plot - it all worked quite well. I agree though, the endings of FF8/9/10 are questionable - it usually takes a sudden twist, without much foreshadowing, leaving the player to wonder why they're taking on this random final boss.
As for SSBB - Final Destination has to be one of the best fighting pieces of recent time.

As with all topics involving musical likes and dislikes, it's all subjective.
In support of this, I'm going to present an example to the contrary - myself. I *never* play video games with sound turned on (especially games such as WoW and Final Fantasy). For me, game sounds have never really significantly improved the quality of gameplay - I much prefer listening to my own music while playing. This is, of course, excluding cutscenes/dialogue, which I do listen to. As for listening to an endlessly looping track occasionally interrupted by the obligatory battle theme (see: FF games)? Not my cup of tea. Our culture can make and has made the good video game themes iconic. For me, however, it doesn't even factor into the gameplay experience. Call me an anomaly - I know I am one.
But hey, that's just me...

Go watch a horror movie without sound and see how it really breaks the atmosphere. Same thing with games. Although I don't play wow with music or sound now after this many years, I used to for at least 2 years after I started playing.
A game like Metroid Prime, one of my favourite games (1 & 2) is nothing without sfx and music. Same thing with Zelda. Now that I think about it, I actually believe music has the greatest impact on adventure/role playing games.
(Also... somebody said Golden Sun. <3 the music in that game.)

Important isn't even the word for it. It's a must have. Without music, you couldn't get epic battles. Now if WoW would implement an epic song for bosses maybe I'd enjoy them more :3 But yeah, music is important, for me it either makes me enjoy the game more or at best a mediocre game. Take FFXIII, I haven't played it, but I've heard the whole game; without the same composer directing the music, it's lost it's feel. The only thing I liked was the battle theme.
I liked the FFXII soundtrack. D:
But, I agree about how crucial some good music is to a game, it makes it much more enjoyable.

If it wasn't for the absolutely amazing soundtrack, I probably would have never bothered with it. And I certainly wouldn't care about SMG2.

Been listening to some of the music from it actually. Makes me regret not having purchased the game (didn't have a wii when it came out). Can't wait to try Galaxy 2 though.
