Laughing Online

Every time I visit Facebook or chat with some of my high school
friends
acquaintances, I decide that I am going to make a vent-like thread somewhere about the online laughs. Let me introduce you to the Internet laughs as I see - subjectively and with bias - see them:
LOL
- without a doubt, the most popular laugh online. Laughing out loud. Under normal conditions I would have no problems with it - I myself "LOL" every now and then, when something really makes me laugh. What bothers me deeply is that youths today use it
all lol the lol time lol
. Or text-message/SMS replies reading only "lol" (possibly with an optional yes/no). Sorry, but if you type "lol" 3 times in a single sentence and you mean it, you'd be dead, because all that laughing would burst your lungs.
ROFL
- Similarly to LOL, ROFL is there to signify that you are laughing really hard. In fact you are rolling on the floor, laughing. Awesome, but it is not something that fills 50% of your status update, note, reply, SMS, etc.
LMAO
- Laughing my ass off. See above.
hahahhahahhaahahhahahah
- This, in my eyes is more acceptable. It conveys the same message as any one of the 3 above, but it's hardly spammable.
xhahxaxhxaxahhhhxaxahxaxha
(with random h's in there) - This is not an English laugh. I doubt it's human one either. If you are Cthuthlu, you might be laughing "khsa-khsa-kha-ha". Then you are forgiven, don't eat me. The best excuse I can think of for this is that you somehow know that in the Cyrillic alphabet 'x' is the letter for 'h', and 'a' is the same, so you can substitute.
Haha
- And now we are getting to the acceptable ones. Short laugh to show that whatever the other person has said is amusing, but your laugh is not to become to topic of the conversation from now on.
Heh
- This is something I have seen only 2 people use online: me and
Adamsm
. It is what it sounds like - a short "heh". Carry on. Good stuff.
Noticed something similar?

Two people? Really? Maybe you're not looking close enough. It's usually stealthed in the middle of two sentences or after a statement.
Don't forget "Jajajajajajaja".

I lol'd.
See what I did there?

In Spanish language, when we laugh we said "jaja" (which phonetically sound very similar, almost identical, to "haha").

Lolzers.
Seriously though, I use "heh" all the time. Kind of on topic, but I seem to always find myself using the emote "
:P
" Why do people use "lol" and emotes so much? I think because it's hard to convey tone via text, especially short messages such as SMS and stuff. Therefore, because people don't want to be misunderstood and people think they're serious, their interject many such things into their chat. Do I really stick my tongue out all the time? No, but I think using it so much in my online talking conveys a tongue-in-cheek tone. It notifies the reader that I am joking and am not serious.

Wow, I feel honoured to get a mention. Still, I use the heh because not all things make you lol... or the joke isn't worth a real laugh.

I "heh" all the time, I dropped frequently using "lol" back when I used to play Runescape. I only rarely use "lol" or any other Interwebs acronym when I'm in a hurry or the like.
Lol, Rofl, Lmao, are often abused. and it really annoys me.

Rofl and Lmao, in my experience are almost irreversibly linked with snarkiness and insults.
Lol is so overused that when I want to use it because I'm genuinely laughing out loud I have to remind myself that
I'm
the one using it correctly and those other guys can suck it.

You seriously haven't seen me use 'heh'? I use it all the time chatting, and quite a bit here.
