How do you balance your main and your alt?

Recently, I moved over to a new server to raid with some friends. In the beginning, I only moved over my rogue (the character that I planned to raid on), but after a couple weeks we managed to get ICC on farm. So, like any gear hungry player, I moved my shaman alt over as well.
But, even though I dropped the cash to move my shaman to a new server I find that I'm still spending almost all my time on my rogue. It makes me wonder -- are there any techniques that you use in order to balance the time you spend on your main and alt? I almost feel guilty, letting my shaman sit around, unplayed for days at a time.

If you finished your dailies and capped the 25 mark, got your daily 2 frosties and know you don't have any raids or anything to attend then you go back to your shaman.

I'm in the same spot as gbpacker -- I feel like I should be putting what time that I have into my main. Mining for Titanium so I can get new Jewelcrafting recipes, doing BGs so I can get better PvP gear, etc.
It's an odd place to be in, for sure.
Perhaps I'm just putting unnecessary on myself over a videogame? I do like the YJMark approach, 'just play what feels right.'

I don't really have too many alts I play on.
My current main (my hunter) I leveled with heirlooms, and that makes leveling easier and more fun, but the problem is that I've already done all of the low level quests. Plus, it's boring playing on a character with only one spell compared to my hunter...
Oh, and if there are any low level quests or dungeons I haven't done, it's way more fun just to do them on my hunter than to do them on a lower level alt.
I'm telling myself I'll wait until Cataclysm to level any more alts. I should have more heirlooms by then, and hopefully the leveling experience is exciting. The goblin and worgen starting zone previews look pretty cool :)

I find if I'm leveling an alt. I don't plan to play it at all. But when I do, I expect to gain a certain amount of exp. (Be it levels or bars)
If I was gearing an alt at 80, I would see if there's any raids going on my main (5200 gs) if I need it. If there isn't any groups going or I'm saved. I go on my Mage for the same thing (5100 gs now). If not I try to get in heroics as I still need the wand and ring.
My days start out on my Mage as he is my Auctioneer guy. Get my gold, do daily and Ahune. Go on my Hunter for the same thing, while checking for raids in the process. Go back to my Mage for more heroics, keep searching for raids. If there's nothing and get bored of heroics, I go to my Druid to spam randoms and such to level. Rinse and repeat for when I get bored.

I play whatever I feel like playing. That might be the reason I have so many alts...
I usually do just important things with my main druid, or farming things I want on him. But then, I worry about my alts gear too and try to raid with them time to time!

I have 5 80s and all are pretty balanced out. You can check out my profile if you wish.
I try to balance them all giving them Raid spots and if I can't find a team for them I will pug one or join one. There are going to be times where you just dont play the class for awhile but eventually sooner or later you will find a spot for them in a raid whether it be today , tomorrow or couple weeks from now. Everything takes time and patience. Eventually you you find yourself pretty geared. You just have keep your eyes open and be prepared to switch toons when the the raid leader needs a certain class.
My Paladin (main) Prot/Holy - Raidsd on Mon/Thurs ICC10M - MT ICC25M
My Rogue - Pugs 25M ICC most of the time because he's mostly a PVP! Occasionaly he gets in a 10M ICC
My Hunter - He was was suppose to farm mats for me but eventually became a raider. He pugs ICC10/25M
My Priest -Raids Tues/Wed - Tries to squeeze in some ICC pugs here and there..
My DK - Has a team on Saturdays!
Again it all takes time an patience

I just don't balance. If I want to play the main rogue, I play him. If I can't be arsed, I run stuff on other chars.
Funnily enough, I managed to kill 11/12 in ICC25 (with Marrowgar, Gunship and Rotface on heroic)
with a pug
on an
alt
I rarely log. If only all pugs were like that.

Well said! I like this state of mind.

Hear, hear. It seems like most pugs are hoping that the 25% buff will carry them.
So far, a lot of great suggestions in here. I'm slowly learning how to balance an alt.

Balance is something i don't do with my 2 80s. But if i did i would make sure i did dailies and randoms on both raid half the week on my Warrior other half on my Shaman. Patience is a virtue all should have, one that some don't, it takes time, effort, blood (ok not blood but you get my drift), sweat and tears and patience to get alts and main balanced.
Off-topic: Can't wait for summer issue of WoW magazine

Off-topic: Thanks Quilan :D We're hard at work on it (even as I type this!), and don't hesitate to stop by our forums and let us know what you think of it.
Related: Thanks for all the tips so far. I've felt bad neglecting my shaman, but I think now I can a.) worry about it less and b.) deal with his dailies in a more relaxed fashion.

I go crazy trying to figure out what toon I wanna play, I thought it would be cool having a bunch of 80s but its more of a pain in the ass than anything. As of right now I have no clue which toon to play and enjoy, I have a priest and druid in their 20s with BoAs but the thought of leveling again makes me wanna cry.

I generally just get on my Hunter to do a few dailies, check the auction house, then go level an alt.
If it's a raid day, though, then I just raid and get off.
Level 80 alts are really a problem, in terms of trying to balance play between them. I have a shaman and druid at 80, and I ended up not liking either, so I just kept playing the hunter.

Instead of trying to get all your 80s equally good, specialise. I have a PvE Mage, PvE/PvP Priest, Professions paladin (for now anyway, getting def capped is annoying), Gathering Death Knight and PvP Rogue. I'm more concerned with becoming self-sufficient than getting all my toons ubered.
This is a genuinely great idea. I think I'll give it a try -- time to finally start leveling herbalism and alchemy on my shaman!

I don't. I just make em all mains and pimp em out with cash =).
In all seriousness, I do tend to play on my main more (mostly for dailies and such) and use my alts as extra instance lockouts or for their roles/professions.
Just missing Blacksmithing now...
I also make sure to log onto each one every once in awhile to shake the dust off...make sure I don't forget how to play them.
