Anyone here find autotune fascinating or somehow artistic?
Not I. Autotune irritates me. I could see how some people would enjoy it as a stylistic choice, but I find it grating.
It's a great addition to house and techno, but it sounds annoying in pop and hip-hip.

So I've decided to put together a list of my top 4 favorite bands and my favorite songs by them. First band is my favorite, second is second favorite, etc. First song listed is favorite, then proceed from there.
1/2*. Dragonforce (surprise surprise).
Once in a Lifetime
,
Fury of the Storm
,
The Flame of Youth
and
Heroes of Our Time
.
1/2*. HammerFall.
At the End of the Rainbow
,
Natural High
,
Fury of the Wild
and
Renegade
.
3. Nightwish.
Amaranth
,
7 Days to the Wolves
and
Sahara
.
4. Jimmy Eat World.
Sweetness
,
A Praise Chorus
,
Get it Faster
and
The Middle
**.
* Dragonforce and HammerFall switch places depending on the day.
** I have decided not to link the Middle's music video. Go look it up if you want.

3. Nightwish.
Amaranth
My first Anette song, and the song that kept me from hating her 'cause I missed Tarja :P I definitely like
Nemo
the best though.

I love progressive metal - progressive rock in general, really - and these are easily 4 of the best bands in the genre. Dream Theater and Mastodon, especially, are two I have trouble picking between.
When it comes to prog metal, Symphony X and Liquid Tension Experiment (which is pretty much all-instrumental Dream Theater, since Petrucci and Portnoy are both in it) are also really awesome. The best regular prog rock is probably Rush, King Crimson, Yes, Porcupine Tree (which I posted about earlier), and Jethro Tull.
EDIT: I can't believe I forgot, but Pink Floyd, too. They're arguably the best, even (Rush is my personal favorite band, but I'd be willing to accept that Pink Floyd is overall better).
<3 this post!
Although you missed Rudess in Liquid Tension Experiment, he's in Dream Theater as well (but wasn't at the time Liquid Tension was created). Which makes LTE even MORE of an all-instrumental DT xD Just leave out James LaBrie and replace Myung with Levin, et voila!
3. Nightwish.
Amaranth
,
7 Days to the Wolves
and
Sahara
.
Meh, I prefer the Tarja period. But maybe that's just because I heard Anette sing a few Tarja-period songs live and it ***ed my ears ...
Let's compare yours to these 3 songs:
Wishmaster
(which has an epic
cover version by Van Canto
),
Dead Boy's Poem
and
Dark Chest of Wonders.
And comparison aside, I'll add in
Wish I had an Angel
, just because it has an insane drive.
Anyways, top bands/songs. Tough choice. But I'll try and post some that I think don't get posted that often (so no DT, even though they're my #1 favourite, followed extremely close by Porcupine Tree). Prepare for head explosions due to awesomeness:
Spock's Beard:
Gibberish
(a Gentle Giant type of song),
The Light
(15 min song on YouTube LOLWUT),
On a Perfect Day
(from a more recent album, aka after D'Virgilio took over the vocals from Neal Morse)
Neal Morse (went solo after he left Spock's Beard, and gets the help from DT's Mike Portnoy on drums!):
The Creation
Evergrey:
Watching the Skies
,
I'm Sorry
(a heavy slow),
Still in the Water
November's Doom:
The Pale Haunt Departure
,
The Fifth Day of March
,
Rain
Epica (dutch band, named derived from an album of Kamelot. The vocalist Simone Simons also appears as a guest on a few
Kamelot songs
):
Dance of Fate
,
Trois Vierges
(featuring Khan from Kamelot. See a pattern there?)
I'll leave it at that :p FOR NOW!
Edit: @ donny: even though I agree that Opeth has prog in it, it's not categorized as prog metal. Doom metal rather. Meh, w/e, I call it prog doom metal (doom prog metal?) anyways xD

Tarja was the only reason I ever liked Nightwish, so obv I don't like the current Nightwish. ;P

I'd categorise them as prog death sooner than prog doom, they can be similar but prog doom tends to be slower and much more dark sounding (see: Tiamat, Katatonia, Pantheist and I guess Anathema) Opeth does sometimes show some doom influences especially on Morningrise but for the most part they are either pure progressive or a mix of progressive and death.

Why? Do they need to be compared? It's the same band, and I still like their music. Why does it need to be "my favorite is better than yours"?

Because obviously he's a better fanboy than you, and therefore by extension a better person.

Same band sure, but totally different sound (they said so themselves while making the latest album).
And I posted them so other people could compare really. To show what the former Nightwish was like. If you like both periods, then kudos to you.
I often hear Opeth said to be one of the pioneers of heavy prog metal, and are often mentioned as one of the foremost prog metal bands with the likes of Dream Theater, Mastodon and Queensryche, so I'd say they're definitely prog. Perhaps predominantly considered doom metal, though.
While this is true (I did agree in my previous post), someone who is into DT will sooner pick up an album of Mastodon or Queensryche than an album of Opeth. Prog fans commonly don't appreciate death vocals. A death metal fan will.
Just checked on Wikipedia, and it is indeed classified as "prog death metal", not prog doom metal. My apologies :p

Epic remix.
...well, music wise, the singing for this song, not as much heh. Check out anything else by Arm Cannon as well heh.

From Wikipedia
As Opeth's primary songwriter and lyricist, vocalist-guitarist Mikael Åkerfeldt's influence dominates the sound of the band. Åkerfeldt is the only member to appear on every release. Influenced at a young age by heavy metal bands such as
Slayer, Death, Black Sabbath, Celtic Frost, King Diamond and Morbid Angel
, Åkerfeldt later discovered
progressive rock
and
folk music
, both of which had a profound impact on the sound of the band. Opeth's distinct sound mixes
death metal
with acoustic passages, while also incorporating elements of
progressive metal
and progressive rock. In his review of Blackwater Park, Allmusic's Eduardo Rivadavia wrote, "Tracks start and finish in seemingly arbitrary fashion, usually traversing ample musical terrain, including acoustic guitar and solo piano passages,
ambient soundscapes
,
stoner rock
grooves, and
Eastern
-tinged melodies—any of which are subject to savage punctuations of death metal fury at any given moment." Åkerfeldt commented on the diversity of Opeth's music:
I don't see the point of playing in a band and going just one way when you can do everything. It would be impossible for us to play just
death metal
; that
is our roots
, but we are now a mishmash of everything, and not purists to any form of music. It's impossible for us to do that, and quite frankly I would think of it as boring to be in a band that plays just metal music. We're not afraid to experiment, or to be caught with our pants down, so to speak. That's what keeps us going.
Vocally, Åkerfeldt shifts between traditional death metal vocals for heavy sections, and clean, sometimes whispered vocals over acoustic passages. While his death growls were dominant on early releases, later efforts incorporate more clean vocals, with the 2003 release Damnation featuring only clean singing. Rivadavia noted that "Åkerfeldt's vocals run the gamut from bowel-churning grunts to melodies of chilling beauty—depending on each movement section's mood."
Pretty sure that sums it up better than any of us ever could.

I also read in an interview somewhere that Åkerfeldt prefers singing the grunts over clean vocals. But I guess he has
Bloodbath
for that xD (which has Axenroth as a drummer as well btw).
As a sidenote, Bloodbath is just that one tiny step too far for me.

I've never heard of Bloodbath before. I might have to go check them out.
