Lore wise and all its counterproductive and all to have him as a leader.
In terms of spurring further conflict between alliance and horde, its a good move.
All I got to say about it.

I believe Garrosh was an extreme, but lore-wise valuable character. There was no better new Warchief then Garrosh. Despite, or maybe because of his agressive behavior and his pretty much constant anger. For he might have been alot, one thing he wasn't, and that's a coward, something he prove time and time again.
If you look at the Orc race, their entire history is filled with characters similar to Garrosh. The Horde grew out to be a harsh but honest and courageous race. Running and hiding was considered one of the lowliest things to do, in any and every circumstance hence, "Lok'tar ogar". Garrosh was an Orc by nature. His entire behaviour was as Orc as it gets, likely more so then Thrall.
Then it all got ruined. For whatever reason, the Blizzard story-writers thought it cool to portray Garrosh as one to kill his tougher opponents like a coward, with poison, from the shadows. I'm obviously talking about Vol'jin now. The attempt at his assassination was so much unlike Garrosh as pictured earlier, that I actually consider where the story is currently going, a pathetic joke, perhaps an attempt to ruin World of Warcraft once and for all, in order to introduce a new game. I don't know why Blizzard is doing this, I do know that I think it's a shame to have one of the greatest games, lore-wise, ruined by such poor character development.
A warchief like Garrosh deserves a better end than this.

The difference between Varian and Garrosh is arguably the theme of Mists of Pandaria, where Thrallgasming was Cataclysm's and The story of the Argent Crusade was the WotLK's.
Varian is a Hero, Garrosh is a Villain.
1: Reasons for War
While Varian had legitimate grievances with the horde, and the orcs in particular (Assasinating his father, Invading Azeroth, Razing Stormwind. Killing Anduin Lothar) Garrosh had none and simply thought of the alliance through the stories of one bitter young female orc. (in Heart of War) Where the horde, who had set up in the barrens, wanted more land, which was already the rightful land of the Night Elves.
2: Role Models
Varian's greatest heroes in his youth were his father, and Anduin Lothar, (Whom he named his son after).
While we know little about Llane or Lothar, We know both of them were heroes and were killed by betrayal, leading to Varian's Distrust of the orcs. (Being killed by a Friend and In a peace and being ambushed during Negotiations).
Garrosh's Role models in contrast, was apologetically evil.
It his father, Grom Hellscream. Despite everything, All hellscream seemed to care about were two things. Bloodshed and Power, He was told by thrall that Grom was a hero who saved the orcs, As a result, he began to see
all
Grom did as good. Grom Drank demon blood again after being warned, and killing Mannoroth to free himself and as a side effect, freed his people. Grom's worldview was that he freed himself. Thrall, who was taken under the wing by Grom when just escaped being a Gladiator. Hence rose-tinting his view.
3: Treating his Subjects
This is where we get into the Today of Warcraft, and the part where the differences truly begin to show.
Varian, in the few times he was shown (Due to horde-first storywriting) Showed that he cared about his people and their welfare, best shown in Westfall (Which they forgot to re-instance once again, due to horde-first development)
Garrosh, in the many times he was shown, first evicted any none-orc none-tauren members of the horde, valuing strength over everything else. He throws Krom'gar off a cliff for insulting his honor. Note that his honor was the main reason of this, considering his words. The player is saved by Chieftain Cliffwalker.

Vol´Jin dont deserve better. the Troll leader is a scheming, whiny, cowardly little ant, and he threatened to kill Garrosh in just that way himself, so Garrosh just turned the tables. Off him quickly, in a practical manner.
Garrosh would have defeated Thrall if not the Scourge would have intervened, and he bested Cairne. He has got nothing to prove by dueling Vol´Jin, just much to lose, since Vol´Jin would cheat.
Garrosh is (still) the coolest character ever in my opinion.
