Yeah the servers are down. Yeah, I'm writing a post about it. It is your choice to click on the post title, and to read this, so do not tell me you dont want to hear more QQ. Agree with me, refute my arguments with something grounded in logic, or leave. That simple. No one is forcing you to read this, unless of course, they are standing behind you with a gun to your head, in which case I apologize.
With that said, I offer a simple suggestion to help solve the once-a-week disappointment the same group of people manage to experience over and over again: Do not plan to play on Tuesdays, so that you cannot be disappointed when you are unable to.
Blizzard takes the servers down for a variety of reasons every Tuesday, and this process becomes even more important with an upcoming expansion, which for the servers translates into an ever increased data processing quota.
The servers must be tuned and upgraded to handle more players, more incoming and outgoing data, latency and network connectivity. When maintenance is extended, it is always for a good reason, Blizzard wants to ensure the smoothest player experience and server/data stability. I know I sound like a robot Blizzard employee but I sincerely believe that they do not keep the servers down just for fun. They don't want the servers crashing and burning come the Cataclysm (Ha-ha!) so they must get ready.
WoW is a great game and I love it as much as the next guy, but for those of you who say you really need your daily "fix", that might be a hint indicating that you are playing a little too much. How you spend your time is, of course, your freedom and choice.
The lesson: Dont expect to play on Tuesday, and certainly dont even think about planning raids. The closer Cataclysm comes, the more maintenance there will be to do, potentially.
Oh and when will they be back up? The answer:
Soon™

I actually expected this to be a QQ about extended maintenance, and not a QQ about QQs about extended maintenance. Pleasant surprise!
On-topic: I agree. Maintenance happens. It will continue to happen. Anyone with any sort of experience in the IT industry (working with a massive infrastructure like WoW - excludes small companies, of course) knows that the only thing you can guarantee in regards to maintenance is that the unplanned can (and frequently
will
) happen.

I absolutely agree with you on the maintinance. I know it is necissary I am a software engineer. My only complaint is that they leave us in a bad place informationwise. I wish they would either give us alot more information on what they are doing and give full disclosure, or just say they are down and not give a time when they "aniticipate this process will be complete." The fact that if you want to play or if you are numbered on the number of days you can play and you keep checking at the time they say it seems a waste. One other thing they could do is set up a trigger in the database, which trust me they could do, and send out a mass email when the servers come up to your battle.net account telling you when the servers are us so you dont have to keep checking back again.

Fixed that for you. *grin*
I think that the majority of people QQing about servers being down are young and have very little
life
experience.

I'd like to be surprised people still whined about it. But I'm too cynical for that.
